Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has sparked a fresh row with Malaha Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Peter Walunya a week after the lawmaker was caught on camera dramatically slapping the MCA during a funeral held in Kakamega County.

Salasya, who was addressing students of St Gabriel Isongo Secondary School in Mumias East Constituency, took on the MCA again, blaming him for protests that forced the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to transfer a total of 17 teachers from the school after sustained pressure.

TSC transferred the teachers a day after parents and students stormed the school and frogmarched its principal, with the parents angry at the poor performance the school posted in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

According to the chairperson of the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Kakamega Johnstone Wabuti, the 17 were handed their transfer letters to neighbouring schools.

Salasya who had been accompanied by other leaders from the area to demand reinstatement of the teachers to the school, demanded a public apology from Walunya on the spot, blaming him for organising the protests without his knowledge.

"Those people didn't come here by accident. I want the area MCA who is here to come and apologise to the nation right now...for also being part and parcel of whatever happened here," he demanded.

Salasya issued an immediate ultimatum to the MCA to step forward and apologise to the students who had their learning disrupted earlier in the day following the transfer of the teachers.

However, the MCA refused to comply, prompting Salasya to end the meeting prematurely, much to the frustration of the students who pressed him to continue.

"I want you to come here, and apologise to the nation because you did these things without my knowledge. I'm the leader in this constituency so come and apologise to the nation," the MP demanded, to which the MCA tried to salvage himself by rising in a bid to make his remarks but was held back by a colleague.

"Come and apologise...or I close the meeting. I'm closing the meeting...I'm closing it...," said Salasya as he dispersed the students.

Salasya on Friday, January 12 attended a burial in the Malaha/Isongo/Makunga ward before encountering Walunya whom he clashed with after the MCA accused him of disregarding protocol.

The MCA attempted to cut short his speech by urging Salasya to observe respect, to which the lawmaker was defiant.

Salasya however shouted down the MP and demanded that Walunya take his seat, to which the politician declined, a matter that escalated into a full-blown confrontation.

The saga drew reactions from Kenyans as well as political leaders who questioned Salasya's actions.

The MP was resultantly arrested and charged with assault, causing physical harm and creating a disturbance in a way that could lead to a breach of peace in line with section 95 (1) of the penal code. This is after an aggrieved Walunya filed a complaint at Shianda Police Station.

The lawmaker was however freed on Saturday, January 13 on a Ksh50,000 bail following his apprehension. On Wednesday, January 17, he took a plea for assault and grievous bodily harm charges and was charged with the former.
