Mumias East Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Salasya was on Monday, May 19, arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts to face charges of what authorities confirmed was hate speech during his public appearances.

However, the lawmaker, who spent the weekend in police custody following his dramatic arrest, denied the charges and was set free on a Ksh400,000 bond or Ksh200,000 cash bail.

"Hon. Peter Salasya has been granted bail by the Milimani Law Courts in the amount of Ksh200,000 in cash, pending further legal proceedings," a member of Salasya’s team confirmed the development.

Beforehand, the presidential hopeful who was held at Central Police Station in Nairobi had his hearing at Milimani Law Courts postponed due to an error in the charge sheet filed by the presiding judge.

The lawmaker's aide confirmed the developments via social media, condemning what he described as deliberate efforts to undermine the young legislator.

''Hon. Peter Salasya was arraigned at Milimani Law Courts. His legal team waited outside Court 6 all morning, but the magistrate announced an error in the judge's sheet. The case has now been moved to Court 2, and we have to wait. Seems someone is managing this matter," the aide confirmed.

According to the MP, he was ambushed by individuals he believed were officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) along the Isiolo-Nanyuki road after speaking at a rally in Isiolo.

On Friday, after his arrest, his lawyers' attempts to secure his release on bail were denied, citing "orders from above", suggesting possible political meddling in the case.

''Salasya remains detained at Central Police Station. His lawyers’ efforts to secure cash bail have been unsuccessful, with police citing “orders from above” to keep him in custody,'' his aide confirmed.

Recounting the events of the Friday ambush, Salasya claimed that masked men armed with AK-47s—who he believes were officers—blocked his convoy.

He said the alleged officers disarmed his bodyguards and took their weapons, though he initially managed to escape.

Salasya, who recently announced his 2027 presidential ambitions, responded to the incident by stating that his national campaign isn't meant to attack the government. He questioned why he was being targeted, emphasising that his mission has been to connect with citizens, not challenge state power.

The arrest followed a recent incident on the night of Saturday, May 10, 2025, when he reportedly evaded arrest at a Mombasa hotel after locals confronted the officers. Videos shared online showed several armed men in plain clothes and masks at the hotel where the Mumias East MP was staying.

After the incident, Salasya said the individuals, who identified themselves as police, didn’t show any ID or present an arrest warrant.

He also pointed out that the vehicle they were using had no license plates, which raised doubts about the legitimacy of the attempted arrest.
