Embattled Kenya African National Union (KANU) Secretary General Nick Salat has decided to back President William Ruto and his government after he was suspended by the party.

Speaking in Bomet on Sunday, January 15, Salat expressed that he would support the Head of State for the next decade.

He added that he could not envision himself being away from the government and the majority, thus his decision to support the Kenya Kwanza government at the expense of KANU, under the Azimio la Umoja coalition.

“I want to assure you that I will support you all the way. I can not afford to be out of government, to be away from the majority. I am back to the fold,

“Like the prodigal son, I want to state publicly that I will back you for the Presidency for the next 10 years,” Salat stated.

Salat added that even though he backed former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for the Presidency, he had accepted the election results and recognised Ruto as Kenya's fifth president.

Among those who commended him for deciding to change his mind and support the President was Prime Cabinet Secretary, Musalia Mudavadi, who was in attendance.

“Salat is a good leader who has lost a good 15 years. Please welcome aboard and stick to that lane," said Mudavadi.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recounted his time together with Salat in KANU but lamented how he lost 15 years of his life supporting the wrong faction.

"We were with Nick Salat in KANU helping Uhuru Kenyatta from a while back. I told him he is a good man and a good leader but his problem is removing a train from its railroad tracks and walking on grass.

"Now he has come here and cried that he has lost 15 years following a ball player while on top of a horse. After that person misused him, he chased him away, but President Ruto's house is big," Gachagua stated.

KANU chairman, Gideon Moi resolved to kick out the lawmaker after the National Executive Committee (NEC) was notified of complaints regarding his conduct during a meeting held on December 15, 2022.
