Barasa beat former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala of the Amani National Congress (ANC).

Fernandes Barasa of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is the winner of the Kakamega gubernatorial race.

Barasa amassed 192,929 votes, beating former Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala of the Amani National Congress (ANC), who got 159,508 votes.

He was facing off against five other aspirants including Maendeleo Development Party leader Sam Omukoko who polled, Cyrus Jirongo (UDP), Suleman Sumba (KANU), Austine Opitso and Michael Osundwa.

Barasa was running under the Azimio la Umoja coalition under Raila Odinga while Malala was backed by President-elect William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza alliance for the seat.

Barasa's Kakamega scorecard

Barasa emerged victorious in 7 constituencies out of 12. In Matungu, he got 25,077 votes while Malala followed with 11,344 votes.

The ODM candidate also won in Mumias East Constituency and he got 14,828 votes against Malala's 9,107 votes.

In Mumias West Constituency, Barasa got 16,306 votes while 6,750 votes went to Malala.

In Butere Constituency, residents voted for Barasa overwhelmingly and gave him 19,388 votes in the end while 7,853 voters opted for Malala. In Kwhisero 15,322 supported Barasa while 6,499 backed Malala.

In Lugari 20,280 voted for Barasa while 13,331 voters chose Malala. 18,197 voters supported Barasa in Likuyani while Malala got 9,018.

Malala however won in Malava where he had 30,949 votes against Barasa's 10,112. Navakholo constituency residents also backed Malala and he got 17,185 votes against Barasa's 9,967.

The ANC candidate also won in the Shinyalu constituency where he got 15,974 votes against Barasa's 12,505.

Lurambi constituency proved to be a tight contest as Malala won narrowly with 19,863 votes while Barasa got 19,712 votes. In Ikolomani, Barasa got 11,075 votes against Malala's 11,402.

Barasa takes over from outgoing governor, Wycliffe Oparanya, who managed the county's affairs for two terms. He previously worked for Kenya Tea Development Agency Limited (KTDA), Kenya Airways and East Africa Reinsurance.

Barasa's victory assures that Azimio takes control of the Western region, with four out of five counties under Azimio governors. They include Paul Otuoma of Busia County (ODM), Dr Wilber Ottichilo of Vihiga (ODM), George Natembeya of Trans Nzoia (DAP-K) as well as Barasa now, and the lone exception was Bungoma County where former Senate Speaker Ken Lusaka was re-elected on a Ford Kenya ticket, beating Wycliffe Wamatangi of DAP-K.

Azimio earlier won in Mombasa after Abdullswamad Sharif Nassir secured the gubernatorial race.
