The National Police Service (NPS) is appealing to the public to come forward with any information related to the killing of a police officer in Thika, Kiambu County.

The appeal comes after Police Constable Benard Ithai was fatally shot by criminals in the Cravers area while on duty. Efforts to save his life were unsuccessful, as he died from a gunshot wound before reaching the hospital.

In a statement released Thursday evening, Police Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga urged anyone with relevant information to report it at the nearest police station or contact the service directly by phone.

Following the incident, Ithai's family was immediately notified, and a team of officers was dispatched to investigate the matter, with authorities calling for public cooperation in the ongoing probe.

"Police officers responded immediately and, working in collaboration with members of the public, launched an investigation. Currently, officers are pursuing critical leads to apprehend the assailant," stated Nyaga.

As they appealed for public support in the investigation, the police service extended its condolences to the family and loved ones of the fallen officer, promising that justice would be served.

"We commend members of the public for providing crucial information regarding the incident and appeal to anyone with further details that could assist the investigation to contact the nearest police station or use our toll-free numbers: 999, 911, 112, or #FichuakwaDCI (0800 722 203)," added Nyaga.

"The National Police Service remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting lives and property across the country. We assure the public that we will continue to pursue and dismantle criminal networks to ensure the safety and security of all Kenyans, as well as residents and visitors."

According to reports, the officer, who was part of the Special Police Intercept and Verification (SPI) unit, was shot and killed during a routine patrol of the area.

A witness told the media that the officer had been on duty with three colleagues when they stopped a motorcycle rider whose bike lacked the official registration code required for legitimate boda boda operators in Thika.

During the check, a confrontation broke out between the rider and the officer. In the heat of the argument, the rider allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot the constable.

The other officers reportedly fled the scene in panic but returned shortly after. The wounded officer was rushed to Thika Nursing Home but unfortunately died before reaching the facility.
