Two robbers in daring circumstances drilled a hole to gain access to a phones and accessories shop in Kitengela, Kajiado County and escaped with merchandise worth Ksh700,000.

The shop which was owned by a local businessman was captured on CCTV and occurred on the night of Thursday, January 12.

The two men had booked two rooms at a lodging which was adjacent to the phone shop at around 4 pm on that day and spent eight hours inside one of the rooms drilling the hole.

The smartly dressed men were spotted gaining access to the shop from the backside at 5.08 am. They ransacked the shop and left at 6.20 am with the merchandise to complete their mission.

One of them had squeezed himself through the hole and disabled the CCTV cameras before summoning his accomplice inside the shop.

The incident left the owner baffled as to how the organized crime was carried out overnight undetected, despite the noise coming from the drilling of the hole that would have drawn attention.

"It was a premeditated crime. I lost new phone handsets, credit cards, EarPods and cash,” he told the Nation.

The shop's attendant was equally surprised to discover that the premises were in a mess and the shelves swept clean the following morning.

The caretaker of the lodging confirmed the two suspects booking the rooms after approaching the receptionist on duty on Thursday evening, noting that one of them was a loyal customer of the lodging.

“One of the suspects was a regular customer and always preferred room 106 which is adjacent to the phone shop,” he revealed.

He went on to disclose that the details regarding their identification that the suspects had submitted to the receptionist turned out to be fake and the mobile numbers they provided were switched off.

The incident was reported at Kitengela police station under OB number 22/13/01/2023. No suspect has since been arrested over the theft.
