An armed thug was shot dead on Tuesday night, December 27 following a fierce shootout between detectives based at the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) in Makadara, Nairobi County and three armed gangsters who were on a robbery mission a few minutes to midnight.

The DCI revealed in a statement that the thug was part of the armed criminal gang who ignited the shootout after refusing to surrender, firing at the detectives in response.

The detectives shot and killed the thug while two others escaped into the Marigui-ni slums with gunshot wounds with the sleuths giving chase.

"Sounds of deafening gunfire reverberated in the air, rat-a-tat-tat-tat!!! as the undercover sleuths silenced the armed thugs in retaliation after they defied orders to surrender and turned against our men.

"The shootout was followed by the whoosh of a speeding Subaru ya Mambaru flying past the estate, as the detectives went after the remaining two suspects who slipped into to the dimly lit alleys of Marigu~ini slums, their bodies riddled with bullet holes," stated the DCI in part.

Earlier, the sleuths had received information through the investigative agency's anonymous telephone hotline regarding the marauding gang that was attacking pedestrians along Mariakani road with reckless abandon.

"At the scene of the incident, the lifeless body of the fallen thug lay sprawled in a stormwater ditch with the tools of his craft, a homemade firearm loaded with two live rounds of 9mm calibre and a communication gadget imitating a police walkie-talkie displayed close-by," added the DCI.

The scene of the incident was documented by detectives based at the Forensic Crime Scene Investigations unit while the body was removed to a city morgue awaiting autopsy.

Meanwhile, a manhunt for the rest of the accomplices was launched as detectives intensify patrols to ensure city residents enjoy the festive season peacefully.

This comes after DCI shot dead a thug who attacked a middle-aged woman on Wednesday night, December 21 as he fled from the scene of the incident along Muratina road in Mathare, Nairobi County.

The thug who was part of a three-man gang that had been terrorizing residents in the larger Mathare, Pangani and Huruma areas, had attacked the woman who was walking home leaving her sprawled by the roadside, screaming for help.

After taking away the victim’s mobile phone and other valuables, the three walked away casually towards Mlango Kubwa, as members of the public who had witnessed the daring attack raised alarm.

"Luckily, sleuths based at Pangani police station who were on patrol responded to the distress calls just on time, as the boisterous gang took leave, having accomplished their mission. Or so they thought.

"The swift reaction by the sleuths was, therefore, an unpleasant surprise to the Mathare three, as they came face to face with two lanky officers of towering height, recently enlisted in the service," stated the DCI in part.

Shocked by the sudden turn of events, the machete-wielding thugs scattered towards Mathare’s Redeemed Gospel Church.

But as the determined officers gave chase closely behind, one of the thugs turned back and attacked the corporal leading the chase with a machete, missing his jugular vein by a whisker.
