The Global Peace Leadership Conference (GPLC) has announced the cancellation of its opening ceremony which President William Ruto was meant to attend.

According to a press communique seen by Viral Tea, the cancellation was in response to chaotic events over the last two days which included the loss of lives and numerous injuries at Parliament on June 25, 2024.

"The organising committee of the Global Peace and Leadership Conference (GPLC) Africa 2024 regrets to announce the cancellation of the official opening ceremony that was originally scheduled for 10.00 AM, Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Nairobi," the statement read in part.

The decision was reached after lengthy discussions by the top leadership of the convening partners of GPLC Africa 2024. However, GPLC noted that it remains committed to fostering dialogue and promoting peace.

Whereas the opening ceremony was cancelled, GPLC revealed that the track sessions planned for the afternoon of June 26 and the whole day of June 27 would proceed as scheduled.

"These sessions will address critical global challenges, leadership strategies, and pathways to sustainable
peace and development in the African context," added the statement.

GPLC invited participants who cannot make it to Radisson Blu to follow the discussions virtually via the link https://shorturl.at/LlCN0

The event, held under the auspices of the Global Peace Foundation Kenya (GPF) and the Inter-Religious Council Of Kenya (IRCK) and scheduled for June 25-27, was expected to bring together leaders, visionaries, and change-makers from 25 countries to discuss critical issues around freedom, peace and sustainable development in Africa.

"We mourn those who have died, pray for a full recovery for those who were injured, and hope for healing for this nation that it can find a way forward towards a future that benefits all its people. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all participants, speakers, and partners who have supported the GPLC Africa 2024," added the statement.

This comes as the organising committee of the Nyanza International Investment Conference also announced a decision to postpone the conference until a later date.

The unrest began as a response to the government’s proposed tax hikes in the Finance Bill 2024, which have faced widespread opposition from the Kenyan populace.

The protests escalated into violence, with demonstrators storming the Parliament building, setting parts of it on fire, and clashing with police forces who responded with live ammunition and tear gas.

The situation remains tense as Kenyans and the international community watch closely to see how the government will respond to the protesters' demands and the ongoing crisis.
