Nairobi Governor, Johnson Sakaja on Wednesday, June 14 announced that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) took decisive action on an incident whereby four women seemingly of foreign descent were robbed by suspected thieves on boda bodas.

The terrifying incident took place along Nairobi's Ngong Road on Thursday, June 1 and the ordeal was captured in a 30-second closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from cameras installed at the roundabout leading to Jamhuri Estate.

After the clip went viral, Kenyans appealed to the authorities, including the DCI, to take action before Sakaja revealed in a statement that the detectives apprehended the suspects following investigations launched into the incident.

"Thank you, DCI for your action. These culprits have been nabbed by the DCI who will give further details of their action.

"We are grateful for the continued partnership in securing our County," stated Sakaja.

The DCI by the time of publishing was yet to give more information regarding the arrest of the suspects.

The main suspect was seen in the video stalking the quartet of women who were minding their business as they walked casually towards the direction of the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

The thief approached one of the women from behind and snatched her handbag which was strapped around her neck, triggering a brief standoff as the victims struggled to come to terms with what happened.

Initially, the suspect appeared to be working alone in his devious scheme to rob the women of their prized possessions, only to emerge seconds later that he was part of a well-coordinated incident planned by a gang of around seven members -some of who were riding on three motorbikes.

The suspect could then be seen darting to one of the motorbikes and hopping onto it as a means of getaway, with some members of the public seen charging towards the crime scene in a failed attempt to recover the stolen handbag.

Given that there was no traffic at the time, the thieves managed to escape on a fleet of high-speed motorbikes that had swarmed the crime scene to avoid arrest by the onlookers. The women were also seen trying to run after the thieves.

The incident drew uproar online with Kenyans on social media expressing their disappointment towards the young men who were resorting to stealing from innocent citizens instead of channelling their energy towards money-making ventures.
