Two people; a pilot and a passenger escaped death by a whisker after a light aircraft they were travelling in crashed in Baringo County on Sunday, February 26.

The aircraft bearing registration number 5Y-PEC, which was from Narok crashed while preparing to land at the Kampi ya Samaki airstrip, which is close to Lake Baringo.

Photos shared on social media of the crash saw the nose of the aircraft mangled and its wings suffering significant damage.

The rest of the aircraft, including its tail, was intact in what appeared to be an attempt to nosedive into the surface of the ground.

Police officers and officials from the Lake Baringo amenity rushed to the scene to assess the situation and offer emergency aid to the occupants.

Lake Baringo conservator Jackson Komen confirmed that the aircraft was badly damaged, and survivors were taken to Marigat Sub-county hospital for treatment.

The cause of the crash by the time of publication was yet to be established even as officers from the aviation field were expected to visit the scene for investigations.

Kampi ya Samaki Airstrip is popular in the region and is mostly used by tourists visiting Lake Baringo and other destinations in the vicinity.

Light aircraft have made headlines as a majority of aeroplane crashes recently reported in the country have involved aircraft belonging to that category, raising questions regarding the safety of such aircraft.

In December 2022, two people; a man and his son died following a plane crash that occurred at the Tsavo National Park.

It came three months after four people survived after a light aircraft crash landed at the Nairobi National Park on September 21, 2022, shortly after it took off from Wilson Airport.
