President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto will fly to the United States (US) on May 23, 2024, to be hosted by US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.

This was announced by the White House through Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

"President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will host President William Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto of the Republic of Kenya for a State Visit to the United States on May 23, 2024.

"The upcoming visit will mark the 60th anniversary of U.S.-Kenya diplomatic relations and will celebrate a partnership that is delivering for the people of the United States and Kenya," the statement from the White House read in part.

The visit will strengthen Kenya and the US's shared commitment to advance peace and security, expand their economic ties, and stand together in defence of democratic values.

Jean Pierre added that the leaders will discuss ways to bolster the cooperation between the two countries in areas including people-to-people ties, trade and investment, technological innovation, climate and clean energy, health, and security.

"The visit will affirm our strategic partnership with Kenya and further the vision set forth at the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit: African leadership is essential to addressing global priorities," added the statement.

Ruto minutes after the White House announcement expressed his appreciation to the Biden administration for the invite to the US, a visit he said would provide an opportunity for both US and Kenyan governments and nations to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations, which began at the dawn of Kenya's independence from colonial rule, and the birth of a free, open, democratic sovereign nation.

"I look forward to engaging with President Biden on a broad range of matters of mutual interest to our nations, not just in terms of sectors of economic, political and diplomatic spheres of endeavour, but also with respect to our shared commitment to the fundamental values which define the strong policy convergence and robust strategic alignment of our enterprises, peoples and governments.

"Kenya views the state visit as a high profile opportunity to articulate a new era of dynamic partnership aimed at transforming trade and investment, green energy and climate action, digital technology and innovation, health and human development, peace and security as well as multilateralism and collective action to deliver shared prosperity for Kenya, Africa, the Global South and the entire world," he wrote on his social media pages.

Jill Biden was notably in Kenya in February 2023 where she visited drought-affected communities in Kenya and appealed for wealthy nations to give more as the Horn of Africa suffered its driest conditions in decades.

The 72-year-old community college professor had also met with women and youth leaders toured an informal settlement and laid a wreath for those killed in the 1998 US embassy bombing in Nairobi.

As part of her itinerary, Dr Biden made a personal visit to the Women for Peace Group in Kibera to experience the table banking model, championed by Mama Rachel Ruto through the Mama Doing Good Organization.

She marked her last visit to Kenya through a meeting with President Ruto and his Deputy, Rigathi Gachagua at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi on February 26, 2023.

Currently, Ruto flew out of the country for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he is expected to attend the 37th African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government.
