Gachagua believed that there was no way Kuria could have bitterness towards him as not only is he his worker but also a father figure to him who only corrects him when he has made a mistake.

Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, on Friday, September 22 dismissed a purported rivalry and persistent calls to have Trade Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria sacked.

Speaking during the burial of Mau Mau freedom fighter Field Marshal Muthoni wa Kirima at Kinunga Stadium in Nyeri County, the DP poured cold water on rumours of a bitter rivalry between him and the CS.

Gachagua believed that there was no way Kuria could have bitterness towards him as not only is he his worker but also a father figure to him who only corrects him when he has made a mistake.

"I saw reports claiming that the Mt Kenya region has a problem, Deputy President is fighting with CS Kuria...now, is he my CS? I'm the DP, this is our worker. Can you argue with your employer?

"I want to say that Moses Kuria is our son. I heard people calling for him to be sacked, where will he go? For what reason? I'm his father, I told him not to annoy people too much and to go slow, isn't that my work?" he posed.

Going after the media again, Gachagua scoffed at them for creating a perceived rivalry and politics on control of the Mt Kenya region, assuring that the region was united in voice and reason under his leadership.

He advised the media going forward to tell positive stories regarding their watertight relationship in the populous region.

"When I'm the leader of this region, can I leave Kuria to be tormented? You people, you don't understand this region, you press people. I saw you put a big headline, you printed my face and that of Kuria's.

"Just adjust that photograph and you put the two photos together. That is our story, that is the way we are," he recommended.

CS Kuria chimed in to reaffirm Gachagua as the region’s kingpin saying that he would ensure the interests of the people are protected.

Over the past week, a section of leaders from the opposition as well as some in government pressured President William Ruto to fire the CS over accusations of misconduct.

Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale on Sunday opined that the president should sack Kuria to restore sanity in his leadership.

He said: “ I want to tell you that the people you have given jobs have put you in deep trouble. The minister for trade, and energy and your economic advisors must tell Kenyans what they mean... Sack these people so that the fuel prices come down.”

CS Kuria would later issue an apology for his comments to Kenyans whom he criticised for complaining about the high cost of fuel in the country but the wording of the apology was made in a sarcastic manner in which it took a sly dig at Khalwale.

"Dear Kenyans. On Friday 15th September I made some comments indicating that the price of fuel is likely to go up in the coming months owing to global dynamics," Kuria said in the statement.

"I have since been advised by people like Dr Boni Khalwale and his master that the statement was incorrect,  insensitive and ARROGANT. I am made to now understand that the price will come down. I apologise profusely since to err is human."

Khalwale on his part dismissed the apology, saying that the CS was being sarcastic and not sincere.
