Vanessa Ogema, the 23-year-old woman who was filmed abusing staff at Port Victoria Hospital in Busia County, surrendered herself to the police on Sunday, January 7.

Ogema had walked into Busia police station in the afternoon hours covering her face with a surgical mask and a bulky hood.

However, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) released a mugshot photo of her face during her appearance at the police station.

"23-Yr-Old Vanessa Ogema who was recorded hurling insults to a hospital attendant while disrupting the procedural flow of services at Port Victoria Hospital in Busia has been arrested," stated the DCI in part.

According to the investigative agency, Ogema, a nursing student at Nairobi Women's Hospital College and currently on attachment at Kenyatta University Teaching Referral & Research Hospital (KUTRRH), will be arraigned in court on Monday, January 8.

The incident, which took place at Busia's Port Victoria Hospital, showed the woman filmed harassing hospital staff in the company of a man based on what they termed as failing to attend to a patient.

The woman, amidst the chaos, had even attempted to throw jabs at the nurse while scattering office stationery on the floor and hitting the table before telling the nurse that she threatened to call someone she knew as 'Ababu', a matter Kenyans claimed she was referring to Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ababu Namwamba.

“I have a right, let me call Ababu, this is how you kill people here, we have a patient in the emergency she cannot breathe,” she stated as she threw objects at the hospital staff and littered the floor.

The woman and the man at some point allegedly went ahead to draw a gun, forcing the helpless nurses to flee from the scene, according to eyewitnesses.

In response, CS Namwamba addressed public discussions surrounding his name after several parties had linked him to the dramatic incident on Wednesday, January 3.

“I want to directly address the recent discussions surrounding my name. The actions associated with me do not align with my values or commitment to public service.

"I unequivocally condemn any behaviour against principles of integrity. I am thoroughly investigating these allegations and will take decisive actions to rectify any wrongdoing,” Namwamba wrote on social media.

The act also attracted public condemnation from the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union (KMPDU), led by its Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer Davji Atellah who called for legal action.

Furthermore, it forced hospital staff to down their tools on Friday, January 5, forcing families to transfer their patients to other facilities.

Busia County government, in a statement to newsrooms, pointed out that hospital property was destroyed in the process, including an oxygen concentrator.

Three days after the video went viral on social media, Ogema and her counterpart were reportedly on the run with police having trailed the suspects who were believed to have fled to Nairobi before Ogema turned herself in.

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha condemned the incident, noting that the perpetrators of such acts would face the full force of the law.

“Acts of violence against our healthcare workers are not only reprehensible but intolerable. Healthcare workers deserve our utmost respect as they are the backbone of our healthcare system. They work tirelessly – sometimes under challenging conditions to ensure the well-being of all citizens across different hospital levels,” she stated.
