Seven people died and seven others were critically injured on Wednesday, August 10 after a vehicle they were travelling in crashed while on the way to celebrate an election win.

The vehicle crashed at Longelded in Samburu East along the Isiolo-Moyale highway, according to preliminary reports.

The over 15 people were heading to the location of a Member of County Assembly (MCA)-elect at Leerata for celebrations when their vehicle swerved off the road and rolled near Kalama Community Conservancy. The seven died instantly.

Samburu East Deputy Police Commander, Juma Boy, noted that several others sustained minor injuries and were treated at a local health facility where the critically injured were also rushed to hospital.

The number of occupants of the car was not immediately established.

“Preliminary report show majority of them were from Lorubae within Archers Post and were to meet the politician at Leerata for celebrations,” Boy told Nation.

“We have launched a probe into the matter to establish what transpired before the accident,” he added.

Eyewitnesses added that the vehicle was speeding at the time of the accident.

It comes after several people were feared dead after a matatu was involved in a road accident along the busy Mombasa Road on Monday, August 8, the eve of the elections.

Machakos County, Deputy County Commissioner David Rotich confirmed the accident that involved a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) near Maanzoni, Machakos County.

The matatu belonged to Makos Sacco and was headed to Nairobi County from Machakos.

Data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that about 2,000 people have died on Kenyan roads since January 2022.

1,912 lives have been lost since January 1, 2022, which is a nine per cent increase from the 1,754 reported by the authority in terms of fatalities last year.

Pedestrians account for the highest number of fatalities. 682 of them were killed in accidents as compared to 573 who lost their lives in the same period last year.

After pedestrians, motorcyclists followed with 530 deaths; passengers (308), pillion passengers (185) and 28 pedal cyclists.
