Police in Kericho County launched investigations into a road accident that occurred on Sunday, September 10, claiming the life of a 10-year-old girl.

According to a report by the National Police Service (NPS), the accident occurred at Soliat Corner, Soko Huru along Kisumu- Kericho involving a trailer that rammed into the young girl's house.

The driver who was bound for Kisumu had lost control of the vehicle along the Kisumu-Kericho corner and ploughed into the residential building.

"At about 1020 hours, an unknown driver was driving the said motor vehicle from Kericho general direction towards Kisumu and on reaching the scene of the accident, the driver lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road to the left and hit a residential plot damaging it completely," stated NPS in part.

The 10-year-old girl, who was not named, was inside the building when the accident occurred. She was killed on the spot alongside the unknown driver.

A woman aged 30 and a one-year-old were seriously injured and are currently admitted at Kericho Level 5 Hospital.

The vehicle was still at the scene waiting for offloading and towing to the Police Station.

Photos shared by NPS showed the extensive damage the trailer had inflicted upon the residence with the trailer unit partially intact.

Accidents involving lorries have been on the rise in recent weeks, with concerns raised regarding the working conditions of the vehicles and the competence of the drivers.

On Thursday, September 7, at least 12 people were killed following a road accident involving a passenger shuttle and a lorry at the Ndii area in Voi, Taita Taveta County on the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

Images showed the wreckage of the shuttle owned by Genesis, a Public Service Transport company as well as the trailer which collided with the matatu.

Barely 24 hours later, nine people died and four others were injured in an accident along the same highway in Makueni County.

According to the latest data by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), 2,124 deaths were recorded from road accidents between January and June 2023.
