Meanwhile, a 13-year-old girl died on the spot while another woman aged 23 was injured on Monday night, December 25 after they were hit by a speeding car in Ndandi village, Kisasi, Kitui County.

Confirming the incident, Masimbini sub-chief Mulu Kalu said the injured was a sister to the deceased and was taken to Kitui Level 4 Hospital.

The accident occurred along the Kibwezi-Kitui road as the car was heading from Mutomo to Kitui.

“The car sped off and unfortunately, no one was around to take down its registration details,” Mr Kalu said, adding that a search for the driver was underway.

The incidents add to a worrying trend whereby the number of accidents witnessed on Kenyan roads increasing in December is linked to increased road activities.

On Sunday, December 24, two people died while 20 others sustained injuries following a road accident whereby a bus plying the Nairobi-Malindi route rammed into a trailer at Taru Area along Mombasa Road.

"Two people died in a traffic road accident involving a MASH POA bus and a Mercedes Benz trailer, that occurred on December 24, 2023 morning at Taru Town Center, along Mombasa-Nairobi Highway," a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) read in part.

On Friday, December 22, more than 50 people were injured following an accident along Londiani-Muhoroni Road in Kericho County where a 62-seater bus veered off the highway and landed in a ditch.

On Monday, December 18, CS Murkomen confirmed that 3,999 people died in road accidents between January and December 7, 2023, a reduction number from the 4,352 recorded within the same period in 2022.

Data provided by the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed a contradictory trend, indicating that pedestrians accounted for most of the road fatalities. In 2023 alone, over 1,506 pedestrian deaths had been reported.

However, despite this number being a decrease from 2022, which was 1,682 pedestrian fatalities, the death toll is expected to rise with regard to the increase of accidents on Kenyan roads during the festivities.
