Two people died while 20 others sustained injuries following a road accident whereby a bus plying the Nairobi-Malindi route rammed into a trailer at Taru Area along Mombasa Road on Sunday, December 24.

The bus ferrying passengers from Nairobi to Malindi collided with the trailer bound for Nairobi.

"Two people died in a traffic road accident involving a MASH POA bus and a Mercedes Benz trailer, that occurred on December 24, 2023 morning at Taru Town Center, along Mombasa-Nairobi Highway," a statement by the National Police Service (NPS) read in part.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the trailer driver failed to maintain his lane, forcing the bus to veer off the road.

Reports indicated that the bus was carrying 49 passengers at the time of the accident.

"20 other passengers, among them two juveniles who were seriously injured have been rushed to Samburu Sub County Hospital and the bodies preserved at Kinango Sub County Hospital Mortuary.

"The National Police Service is appealing to motorists to adhere to traffic regulations this festive season to prevent road crashes," added NPS.

In just a matter of days, road accidents have occurred in the country, leading to injuries as well as loss of lives.

On Friday, December 22, more than 50 people were injured following an accident along Londiani-Muhoroni Road in Kericho County where a 62-seater bus veered off the highway and landed in a ditch.

A photo shared by the Kenya Red Cross showed the bus had landed on its left-hand side with pockets of debris strewn all over the ditch and a section of police officers, as well as passers-by, glancing at the scene in horror.

Londiani has seen one of the worst accidents this year where more than 55 people died, most notably at the end of June 2023 when a trailer ran over a matatu and traders along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

Following the accident, Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen announced a series of changes in the transport sector to cut down on the frequency of road accidents in the country.

He directed the mandatory installation of dashboard cameras across all Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) as well as school buses and vans as well as for the vehicles to be fitted with telematics.

On Monday, December 18, CS Murkomen confirmed that 3,999 people died in road accidents between January and December 7, 2023, a reduction number from the 4,352 recorded within the same period in 2022.

According to the National Police Service (NPS), 16 Kenyans have lost their lives in the last 2 weeks.
