A boda boda rider who was captured on CCTV ferrying Dr Laban Langat, a 26-year-old medical officer intern who was murdered at the Nakuru Level 5 Hospital last week, on Thursday, January 18 gave his account of the last moments before his unfortunate demise.

The body of Dr Langat, who began interning at the hospital in August 2023, was discovered in the trenches outside of Margaret Kenyatta Mother and Baby wing on Saturday morning, January 13.

Detectives interrogated the boda boda rider who was captured picking up Dr Langat from an entertainment joint in London, Nakuru West, which showcased the last moments of his life.

In one footage, the late doctor was captured whispering to a friend inside the joint before walking out of the bar alone at 12.08 am.

"At around 11, he stayed there for about an hour with his friends. He looked a bit high, and he just walked out himself," Nakuru West DCIO Charles Kamau told Citizen TV.

At 12.21 am, another footage saw Langat staggering as he approached an entertainment joint at the showground junction. A security guard present at the time opened up on the brief conversation he had with him.

The guard had advised him to hail a motorbike to his destination, the Nakuru Referral Hospital, as opposed to walking for security reasons.

"He was drunk and I told him that it was too dark, I advised him to look for a boda boda.

"He didn't come to an agreement in terms of the price with the first rider, but I saw him board another motorbike and he left. The following day, I heard that he was killed," the guard narrated.

The rider of the second motorcycle revealed that he dropped his client at the hospital, who paid him Ksh100 through mobile money.

"If someone can key in the mobile money PIN, he is probably a tipsy person. He was drunk to the point that he fell. He alighted then he fell, then got up and fell again," he narrated.

Detectives are now seeking answers as to what happened to Langat whose body was discovered just 100 meters from where he was dropped off by the boda boda rider.

Of focus is two theories; whether it was a self-involved accident that he fell into the trench or if it was murder and who was involved, a gap termed crucial for detectives to solve the murder puzzle.

As it stands, the detectives discovered a plot twist after establishing that the CCTV cameras at the hospital were tampered with when the incident occurred, a situation that threatens to derail the family's quest to seek justice.

However, while clarifying the matter, the hospital management noted the CCTVs at the hospital were functional at the time of the murder indicating potential foul play by a person with unfettered access. Nonetheless, it is yet to be established who interfered with the CCTV after the heinous incident.

A postmortem examination conducted on Sunday by government pathologist Titus Ngulungu concluded that the medical practitioner was strangled to death.

“The doctor died due to lack of oxygen after his neck was compressed or strangled,” Ngulungu disclosed.

Following the postmortem results, medical officers at the Nakuru Hospital staged protests calling for justice for their deceased colleague.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah termed Dr. Langat’s death as a huge blow to the medical fraternity.

“The circumstances surrounding Dr Langat's death are shrouded in mystery, and as KMPDU, we call for an immediate and thorough investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to establish the cause of his death. We implore the relevant authorities to expedite the process, ensuring that justice is served swiftly,” he stated.

“This unfortunate incident underscores the pressing need for heightened security measures within medical facilities. We demand that county governments and hospital management prioritize the safety of healthcare workers, particularly medical interns. It is imperative that hospitals adhere to KMPDC and PPB rules, including providing secure housing within hospital premises for medical interns."
