A police officer attached to Deputy President William Ruto's Karen mansion in Nairobi was admitted in hospital after sustaining serious injuries from a fight with a staff member on Thursday, July 21.

The officer, Corporal Timothy Mugendi Rucha, was attacked by the staffer, a gardener, following a confrontation which turned violent.

Detectives investigating the case noted that the corporal was allegedly hit by the gardener on the rear part of the head.

“The officer was taken to Nairobi West Hospital in critical condition with multiple head injuries,” a police report on the matter read in part.

However, it was not clear what led to the confrontation between the officer and the gardener, which occurred in the midnight hours of Thursday morning.

The gardener, who has since been identified as Nicholas Kibiwot Rono, was arrested and is pending arraignment in court on Friday, July 22.

Interior Cabinet Secretary, Dr Fred Matiang'i disclosed that 257 security officers from different units protect the second in command.

74 are drawn from the presidential escort unit, with a commissioner of police a senior superintendent of police and two chief inspectors manning the inner layer of Ruto's security detail.

From the Administration Police and Prisons Service, 121 officers protect his residences in Nairobi, two homes in Sugoi and Eldoret and his poultry farm, among his private investments.

51 officers guard Ruto's investments. Six are stationed at his Kitengela Gas property, four at Weston Hotel, six at 395-acre Murumbi farm and six at ADC Laikipia Mutara Ranch.

“DP Ruto is the most protected deputy in Kenya's history, with 257 security personnel including 74 presidential escort officers,

"Apart from the 74 presidential escort security officers assigned to DP, he has many other security personnel provided to him in total numbering 257. We have provided sufficient security to the holder of the office of the Deputy President," Matiang'i said in Parliament while appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Administration and National Security in 2021.

A bodyguard attached to Ruto had sustained injuries after falling off a speeding vehicle in the deputy president's motorcade.
