Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu on Friday, August 25 appointed new vice chancellors for 13 universities in Kenya.

This follows the competitive recruitment of vice-chancellors which was kickstarted in February by the Public Service Commission (PSC), coming after the tenures of previous university bosses concluded.

According to the Universities Act, vice-chancellors and their deputies are appointed by university councils in consultation with the Cabinet Secretary following a competitive process conducted by the Public Service Commission.

In an announcement by the Ministry, Prof Benedict Mwavu Mutua was appointed as the new VC for the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) while Prof Nathan Oyori Ogechi was picked to take over the reins at Kisii University.

Prof James H. P. Kahindi on the other hand was named as the new university boss of Pwani University.

Machakos University will be run by Prof Joyce Jepkirui Agalo as the new VC.

As university bosses, the 13 new vice-chancellors will be charged with leading the university's academic and administrative departments. They may serve on several university councils, assist with policy development and academic planning, prepare budgets, and maintain the institutions' positive image.

To be successful as a vice chancellor, one should be able to address audiences and engage with a range of professionals. Outstanding vice-chancellors should be active listeners who are able to make difficult decisions.

Here are examples of responsibilities from real vice chancellor resumes:

  • Manage students by establishing an appropriate climate and earning respect through effective leadership techniques.
  • Key responsibilities include full operational oversight, business development strategy and implementation, and campus compliance with reporting and accreditation requirements.
