Agano party leader David Waihiga Mwaure was on Friday, April 21 handed a role in President William Ruto's government more than half a year since losing the August 9, 2022, general elections.

Environment Cabinet Secretary (CS) Soipan Tuya in a Gazette Notice appointed Mwaure to be the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the National Environment Trust Fund for a period of three years.

"In exercise of the powers conferred by section 24 (3) of the Environmental Management and Co-ordination Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Forestry appoint David Mwaure to be the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the National Environment Trust Fund," the gazette notice read.

He began his role as the chairperson effective Thursday, April 20, marking a return to the limelight but this time in a government post after he unsuccessfully contested the 2022 presidential elections.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) cleared four presidential candidates; William Ruto, Raila Odinga, David Mwaure and George Wajakoya in the run-up to the 2022 General Election.

Mwaure was the only candidate to concede defeat before the presidential results were officially announced while predicting Ruto's eventual victory and had promised to challenge any petition filed at the Supreme Court seeking to invalidate Ruto's election.

"We are ready and willing to write statements with the DCI and to be part of and oppose any petition to be filed against H.E. Dr William Samoei Ruto. To emphasize what is in the public domain globally, 46,229 Form 34As have been tallied both by the local and international media tallying centres and they agree to the final IEBC results.

"Chebukati gave us six days of verification of Form 34As and all the agents of the four candidates verified all the Form 34As. All the Form 34As have been uploaded to the whole world and these are the forms with actual votes cast as per the Presiding Officers and the agents at every polling station in the whole country," he stated on August 16, 2022.
