Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) mounted a meticulous operation that led to the arrest of suspected robbers who robbed Mwinjoyo FM, a Gospel radio station based in Nakuru, on Thursday, May 11.

Subsequently, two suspects arrested in connection with the daring robbery with violence were detained by police with the permission of Nakuru Chief Magistrate Bildad Ochieng on Wednesday, May 17.

The suspects- Elijah Theuri and David Ngugi, were detained for seven days to allow police to conclude investigations into the incident.

The DCI officers revealed that it took joint efforts from specialists from DCI's Forensic Crime Scene Investigation Services armed with sophisticated devices to corner the miscreants.

The officers identified the exact location of the suspects and sent a quick-response team that ambushed the suspects at two different locations on two consecutive days (Monday, May 15 and Tuesday, May 16).

"The suspects were hiding in two different locations in order to fool the police officers who were looking for them," the police stated.

Police revealed that machetes (pangas) and swords were recovered at their residences which they raided in their mission to arrest them, one of the machetes which was suspected to have been used in the robbery.

The officers further told the court that they needed to subject the panga to forensics in order to determine if it was used in the criminal act that was captured in a video on social media, which went viral.

“I authorise Eric Wainana, an investigator with the DCI in Nakuru North by this order to detain the suspects for a period of seven days so as to complete their investigations,” Chief Magistrate Ochieng stated.

Chief Magistrate Ochieng ordered the police to detain the two suspects at Bahati Police Line in Nakuru County.

The arrested suspects were believed to be part of a gang which stormed the radio station, manhandled staff and made away with cash and other valuables, with the DCI informing the court that they were looking for six other suspects who were still on the loose as they likely moved away from Nakuru city.

"In the unfortunate incident recorded live on camera, the thugs who were armed with a firearm and machetes were captured as they made their way into the recording studio, where they ordered the presenters to lie down before they ransacked their pockets for money and other valuables.

Zima hiyo kitu! Lala chini (Switch off that thing! Lie down),” one of them ordered as two shocked presenters a man and a woman sprung to the floor," stated the DCI in part in their report which announced a manhunt for the suspects.

The gang made away with eight mobile phones, over Ksh35,000 in cash and eight pairs of shoes. Five cameras were also damaged by the thugs before they escaped by jumping over the establishment’s perimeter, located in Nakuru’s posh Milimani suburbs.
