Relationships are difficult, and not for the faint-hearted. There is no flawless period of dating and there will always be scenarios where two people, a man and a woman, collide under one roof.

Couple fights start from time to time over a number of reasons; petty such as leaving the toilet seat up, forgetting each other's birthday, mistakenly purchasing a basic item for the house; to the major fights that mostly involve infidelity (cheating on each other) and lack of communication.

2022 had its fair share of dramatic relationship battles and no Kenyan has been perfect; be it an ordinary Kenyan or a celebrity or politician and some of them have even gone to extremes such as couples killing each other.

Viral Tea takes a look at couple fights that raised eyebrows in Kenya in 2022:

Maxine Wahome vs Asad Khan

Asad Khan passed away on Sunday, December 18 after an alleged assault by World Rally Championship (WRC) Safari Rally driver Maxine Wahome.

Asad was fighting for his life at the High Dependency Unit (HDU) at the Avenue Hospital in Nairobi following a domestic spat which led to his girlfriend Wahome being arrested. However, she was later released on a Ksh100,000 cash bail.

Adil said his elder brother lost a lot of blood after the brutal assault on Monday, December 12. He had been admitted to Nairobi Hospital before he was transferred to Avenue Hospital.

He added that his brother was injured by Wahome on Jamhuri Day after she allegedly returned home drunk from a dinner party she had attended on the night of Sunday, December 11.

Wahome is being investigated over an offence of causing grievous bodily harm which might lead to a lengthy jail term if she is charged with murder and convicted.

Karen Nyamu vs Samidoh

Nominated senator Karen Nyamu has been famous for courting relationship drama wherever she goes. However, none has grabbed headlines than the clash with Mugithi singer Samidoh Muchoki, which took a turn for the worse on December 16, 2022.

Nyamu had called off her relationship with Samidoh on Saturday, December 17 after she was embroiled in a standoff with his wife, Edday Nderitu at a club in Dubai. Edday, who was close to Samidoh, was alarmed, a matter that ignited verbal confrontations between Nyamu and Samidoh as captured in the video that went viral on social media.

Samidoh's wife tried evacuating Nyamu from the scene before security officers eventually whisk her away from the venue. However, the drama seemed to have been forgotten in another video that captured Nyamu dancing and performing on stage with Samidoh and Akorino singer Karangu Wa Muraya.

After defending her actions by stating that she was under the influence of alcohol and promising to quit drinking in 2023, she penned a statement shared on her Instagram stories, promising to never again repeat her actions since she is a member of a top government arm.

Nyamu was summoned by the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party's disciplinary committee which pushed the proceedings to January 20, 2023, to allow her more time to prepare her response for the hearings of the summons issued against her.

Size 8 vs DJ Mo

One of the most notable signs of a major divorce in celebrity circles occurred amongst the Murayas, who bear a huge following on social media.

Media reports had revealed in late August 2022 that the couple parted ways, with the Mateke hitmaker alleged to have moved out of their matrimonial home with her children. They had friction with each other which was revealed to have lasted a while.

Speaking in a YouTube video on Wednesday, August 31, Size 8 revealed that she was angry at DJ Mo and had to give herself some space to calm down.

“I ran, I just needed some space to breathe and talk to God because I believe when my emotions are so high and we are under the same roof, we will talk angrily at each other or even treat each other badly.

"So I had to go and I left,” she said.

On his part, DJ Mo noted that he returned home to find an empty house, indicating that things were not well on their end, despite being grateful that their issues were not immediately known.

“When I went home around 10-11 pm, I found the house empty. But one thing we know for sure is that we knew no one knew," he said.

The Mateke hitmaker, however, added that she did not leave for 'a small reason' but DJ Mo apologized and they solved their issues amicably. The couple also sought guidance from the clergy who advised them on how best to resolve their issues.

Amber Ray vs Kennedy Rapudo

Way before they reconciled and got engaged, the socialite and the businessman lit up social media after Amber announced that she had dumped him on Wednesday, August 24.

A fan had asked her if the couple were still together, to which the socialite denied, adding that she was tired of pretending to be in a relationship she was not comfortable with.

“I know where it has reached, I might look like a joker but I don’t know how to pretend. If it is not working, it’s not working so love me the way I am,” she responded.

Rapudo on his part revealed that differences beyond repair contributed to the split, but he praised her as an amazing ex-partner with a good heart and wished her the best in her endeavours.

"Life happens right? Ideally speaking, we had irreconcilable differences but that doesn't change who she is. She's a very nice person with an amazing heart and a beautiful soul. Mine is to wish her happiness and God's favour wherever she goes," he wrote.

Bahati vs Diana Marua

You wouldn't think that Bahati and Diana Marua would lock horns given that they are the most popular celebrity in the country right now, but they did over a topic that has led to several debates.

In July, the two publicly disagreed over who should undergo a permanent birth control procedure to prevent them from having more children, with Bahati first suggesting that Diana should undergo tubal ligation.

“After this child, I think we are done, let us close this chapter so I recommend you get a more permanent solution,” he said.

Diana however suggested that Bahati should undergo a vasectomy to avoid her siring more children in the future.

“Bahati should go and do a vasectomy because at this point that is the only sacrifice he is supposed to do for me. I have given him three children, so it’s up to him to consider vasectomy because for me I’m not getting more children. It’s a wrap. I have five children already,” she told YouTuber, Eve Mungai.

She was irritated by Bahati's previous sentiments, saying that he should “Stop putting rules in my life, this is my body. Stop telling me that once I’m done giving birth I tie my tubes. The week I go to deliver you should go get a vasectomy." They, however, resolved their differences.

Simon & Sarah Kabu

The Kabus are well-known in the country's hospitality sector and have been serving ‘goals’ on social media. Frosty relations however emerged in April 2022 when Sarah, in a tell-it-all interview with Christine Lewis, uncovered explosive details of the wrangles in their marriage.

“50 or 70 per cent has been what you see on social media. Very blissful. We have had our good times but we have also had our bad times which we do not show on social media.

“Sometimes when I meet people they tell me that I inspire them and we are ‘couple goals but I wished I had simple and peaceful unions like theirs,” she said.

Sarah revealed that they had marital issues for around 10 years and one of her resolutions this year was to be true to herself and tackle issues head-on, including peaceful separation and a co-parenting plan which she wanted to do quietly.

She stated that she did not have a problem with Simon supporting his children (from his previous relationships) but wanted a close-knit family without drama.

“Since publicly gifting our children property, the baby mamas have been very aggressive. I am also human and it becomes stressful when you are trying to pool resources together and then it goes out to support others.

“I have even guided him in choosing good schools to take his children to lead a comfortable life. I once joked with him that perhaps I will meet those ladies (baby mamas) during his burial but I pray to go before him so that I do not face the drama,” she remarked.

Barely a day after the explosive interview, Sarah sought forgiveness from her husband Simon, saying she was in distress and perhaps should not have said some things online.
