Outgoing IEBC chairperson, Wafula Chebukati chose a rather odd hour to appreciate Kenyans for allowing him to execute his mandate during his six-year term.

He penned a farewell letter to members of the public, which was shared on his social media platforms at 1.46 am, coming at a time when details of an alleged plot to kidnap and eliminate him before the August 9 elections were made public by President William Ruto.

"I was appointed Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) on 18th January 2017 for a constitutional term of six years. Yesterday I successfully completed my term.

"I wish to thank Kenyans for giving me the opportunity to serve them. It has been an honour. It was undoubtedly a challenging assignment, but I served my country to the best of my ability and in accordance with the oath of office I took," he wrote in part.

Turning to the commissioners and chairperson set to succeed him, Chebukati asked them to stick to their mandate in their respective roles at the Commission, which he has left in a stable position.

"I leave the IEBC with solid governance structures and a stable permanent secretariat. To the IEBC staff, thank you for working tirelessly and with dedication despite difficult circumstances at times.

"You are the true heroes. To the future Commission, fidelity to the law is the key to success at IEBC," he added.

Meanwhile, Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's allies demanded the President to form a commission of inquiry after making the claims of the assassination plot on Chebukati on Tuesday, January 17 during the meeting with independent commissions and constitutional offices at State House in Nairobi.

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina termed as serious allegations that need to be uncovered and urged him to extend the inquiry to cover the previous elections whereby officials lost their lives under mysterious circumstances.

"Mr President, to end all conspiracy theories and the talk on the IEBC debacles, let’s cut to the chase! Set up a commission of inquiry and extend it to cover the last two elections," he stated.

Emabakasi East MP Babu Owino however believed that the President and Chebukati should stop focusing on matters to do with the 2022 general elections.

"Can the President and Chebukati stop making noise to Kenyans about the past election? It is water under the bridge. It is time to stop singing and start swinging. Work for the people of Kenya," stated the legislator.

On his part, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna however expressed concern regarding the claims which he viewed as weighty and wondered if he would support his claims with solid proof when the official probe into the events leading up to the August 15, 2022 announcement is launched.

Chebukati, Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu's six-year term in office came to an end on January 17, 2023. Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua assured the trio of security by the government even after they retire.
