The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has ordered former Murang'a Governor Mwangi Wa Iria to present himself to the EACC headquarters in Nairobi by Tuesday morning, April 16.

Wa Iria, his wife Jane Waigwe Kimani, and six other suspects are required to appear in person at the Integrity Centre headquarters for processing on Tuesday at 8.00 am without fail.

The anti-graft body claimed that the eight are currently evading arrest in connection with a procurement fraud investigation totalling Ksh140 million.

Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs and Communication Eric Ngumbi confirmed that EACC has directed the former governor to appear alongside the officials.

"The commission directs the eight to report to EACC headquarters at Integrity Centre or nearest EACC regional office by Tuesday 8 am without fail," Ngumbi told the media.

This comes following a decision by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to charge the eight over the procurement fraud irregularities totalling the aforementioned amount. They are accused of irregularly awarding tenders and other procurement irregularities.

DPP Renson Ingonga recommended that Wa Iria and the seven be charged with a conspiracy to commit an offence of corruption in contravention of section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, Abuse of office contrary to section 46 as read with section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act, and Unlawful acquisition of public property against section 45 (1) (a) as read with section 48 of the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.

“This follows an investigation by EACC on procurement irregularities and conflict of interest in the award of publicity tenders by the County Government of Murang'a to M/S Top Image Media Consultancy Ltd in the Financial Year 2014/2015 and 2015/2016,” explained the ODPP on Sunday, April 14.

“The eight were found to have engaged in procurement irregularities in the award of publicity tenders to Top Image Media Consultants Limited and Value View Limited."

Reports indicated that EACC detectives had planned to nab him hours after ODPP's statement in Mumias where he was attending a function with other Azimio leaders, only for Wa Iria to learn of the plans.

With this alleged intelligence, the former governor failed to disembark from the chopper, thus avoiding arrest which could have forced him to spend a night in custody.

In the same vein, EACC detectives arrested former National Museums of Kenya Director-General Mzalendo Kibunja over allegedly paying Ksh490 million irregularly to ghost workers and later transferring to officers of the institution between the financial years 2015/16 and 2021/22.

He was arrested alongside three other National Museums of Kenya officials and was detained at the EACC Integrity Centre police station awaiting to be arraigned on Tuesday.

The commission said it is set to initiate a recovery process for the embezzled resources.
