The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced the fuel prices for the period between Saturday, July 15 and Monday, August 14.

In the latest monthly review, the price of Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene were reviewed as follows: Super Petrol and Kerosene decreased by Ksh0.85 and Ksh3.96 per litre while Diesel was left unchanged.

"Taking into account the weighted average cost of imported refined petroleum products, the changes in the maximum allowed petroleum prices in Nairobi are as follows: Super Petrol & Kerosene decrease by Kshs0.85 & Kshs3.96 per litre respectively while Diesel remains unchanged," the statement read in part.

"EPRA has calculated the maximum retail prices of petroleum products which will be in force from July 15, 2023, to August 14, 2023, in accordance with Section 101(y) of the Petroleum Act 2019 and Legal Notice No.192 of 2022."

Super Petrol, Diesel and Kerosene thus retail at Ksh194.68, Ksh179.67 and Ksh169.48 respectively from Ksh195.53, Ksh179.67 and Ksh173.44, respectively, in Nairobi, all per litre.

The new fuel prices, which take effect from midnight, came as a reprieve for motorists using Super Petrol and Kenyans using Kerosene for domestic use in their homes.

However, Diesel users such as some Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) motorists will continue to dig deep into their pockets to fuel their vehicles.

By the time of publishing this article, EPRA was yet to give a breakdown of the fuel prices for the rest of the towns.

The review came only two weeks after the 16 Per cent VAT on fuel products included in the Finance Bill forced EPRA to increase fuel prices on Friday, June 30, particularly Petrol by Ksh13.

"Pursuant to the Finance Act, 2023, VAT on Super Petrol, Diesel & Kerosene has been revised from 8% to 16% effective 1st July 2023. Accordingly, EPRA has recalculated the maximum pump prices that will be in force from 1st to 14th July 2023 taking into account VAT at 16%.

"As a result, the changes in the maximum allowed petroleum pump prices in Nairobi are as follows: Super Petrol, Diesel & Kerosene increase by Ksh13.49, Ksh12.39 and Ksh11.96 per litre respectively," EPRA stated in part at the time.

The High Court suspended all taxation contained in the Finance Act, 2023, a move that barred EPRA from effecting the new fuel VAT.

The court’s decision has since thrown oil marketers into a spin with some opting to retain VAT on fuel at eight per cent amid fears they will be sued for implementing a tax declared illegal.

On Saturday, July 2, Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah gave EPRA's management an ultimatum to obey the court order that stopped President William Ruto's government from effecting the Finance Act of 2023.
