Former NTV Swahili managing editor cum news anchor, Salim Swaleh was on Wednesday, January 11 appointed to Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi's media team.

Swaleh, who was previously nominated for the position of Information and Communications Technology, ICT, e-Government and Public Communication chief officer at the Nakuru County government, will now spearhead the team as the Director of Communications.

In his new role, he will be in charge of establishing and driving a multi-channel communications strategy, preparing and managing all communications material, developing a brand voice and maintaining brand integrity across all platforms.

He will also manage media relations and develop contacts with media houses and influencers as well as lead a team of professionals from various sectors such as communication, marketing and design. He will also help in the creation of multimedia content.

Former K24 reporter, Anders Ihachi will deputize him while Humphrey Odhiambo was appointed the editor and will be assisted by two senior principal officers; Maureen Mutai and Michael Kimingich.

Swaleh's name was among 21 others whose names were forwarded for vetting by the Nakuru County Assembly. However, details regarding the move from the county government to Mudavadi's office are still unclear.

“Pursuant to the provisions of the County Government of 2022, the county government placed an advert for qualified applicants to apply for the position of county chief officers. Twenty-one names found suitable have been forwarded to the county assembly for vetting and approval," read the notice in part.

Reacting to the appointment, Swaleh explained that his role was different from a communication spokesperson as he would be serving under the County Executive Committee (CEC) within the County government.

Other journalists whose names were forwarded include NMG's Nakuru-based photographer Titus Cheboite Kigen (photographer), Martin Gichinga (director of communication) and Kigotho Mwangi (deputy director of communication).

Swaleh joined NTV after he resigned from Royal Media Services' (RMS) Citizen TV in 2018.

‘’Yes, it is true I left Citizen TV a week ago. I resigned for personal reasons not because of what I am reading online. My salary and the little I get from my businesses are enough money for me.

"I am a professional journalist who has worked with international media entities,” Swaleh said after exiting the Kilimani-based media house.

Swaleh joins the likes of NTV's Kennedy Murithi, former Citizen TV News Anchor Hussein Mohamed, TV47's Karen Karimi Knaust, Citizen TV's Nicky GitongaKTN's Dennis Onsarigo and Ramogi FM's Charles Odhiambo among other journalists appointed to government roles.
