UPDATE: President William Ruto has sent a message of condolence to the family and friends of former Ainabkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut.

The President described Chepkut as an astute politician who was known for his humility and humour.

"Mr Chepkut was down-to-earth and a witty politician who served his people with dedication," the President said.

Former Ainabkoi Member of Parliament William Chepkut has died.

His family confirmed that the legislator died on Saturday, October 8, 2022.

Preliminary reports indicated that the former lawmaker collapsed at his home and was rushed to a hospital in Nairobi for emergency treatment.

Efforts to resuscitate the legislator proved futile, with doctors pronouncing him dead at a facility in Parklands.

Chepkut disclosed in 2021 that he fell in a city hotel and was rushed to hospital where he spent two months in admission.

“In July, I missed a step at the hotel and rolled down several metres to the ground; I fainted and was rushed to Nairobi Hospital where I received treatment and was discharged,” he explained.

Chepkut added that he went to Dubai for further consultation and was told that he had to undergo surgery to treat his knee.

“I took it lightly and came back home and then proceeded to Uganda for other duties. But in a shocking twist of fate, around the same time, I suffered two other accidents that totally grounded me.”

He added that in the last accident, he fractured his hand and was rushed to the Hospital in critical condition where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. He later underwent a 36-hour surgery on his legs and the injured arm.

“Being in a hospital bed for this long has taught me a lot. I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and how people have sacrificed their time to come and see and pray for me. I got a call from President Uhuru while he was in the United States. Deputy President William Ruto has also reached out," he disclosed at the time.

Chepkut was the Ainabkoi lawmaker between 2017 to 2022 after being elected an independent candidate.

The former personal assistant of the late Nicholas Biwott lost to UDA's Samuel Chepkong’a in the 2022 general elections. The incumbent garnered over 26,000 votes compared to Chepkut's 13,000 votes.
