UPDATE: The African Union (AU) postponed the Ethiopia peace talks that were to take place on Saturday, October 8, with Associated Press on Friday, October 7 revealing that the postponement was confirmed by diplomatic sources.

Logistic issues prompted the cancellation of the peace talks. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta had requested for the event to be rescheduled due to his conflicting schedules.

The African Union (AU) is yet to issue a statement on the postponement.

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta's efforts to keep a low profile since his retirement from power after handing over to President William Ruto have been hitting bumps.

A photo of him post-retirement has now found its way to the internet and was shared by United Kingdom (UK) Member of Parliament for Reading West Alok Sharma on Friday, October 7.

Sharma, who is also the COP26 President travelled to Kenya and has held meetings with top leaders including President Ruto.

He shared that he was grateful to share a conversation with Uhuru, who also happens to be the Global Champion for Africa Adaptation.

“Great to speak to Uhuru Kenyatta, Global Champion for Africa Adaptation.

"We discussed the urgent need for countries to implement COP26 adaptation finance commitments. I look forward to working together to strengthen resilience in climate-vulnerable countries,” he said.

Sharma had beforehand met Ruto at State House in Nairobi in talks that saw the Head of State assure Kenya's ambition for clean energy by 2030.

“Thank you President William Ruto for an excellent meeting and your strong commitment and leadership on clean energy - 100 per cent clean energy in Kenya by 2030. I look forward to working with you and your team on the road to COP27 renewed Kenya-UK cooperation,” he said.

As aforementioned, Uhuru's attempts to escape the hawk eyes of the press hit a snag on Friday when he announced in a statement that he was opting out of the peace talks on the ongoing conflict in Ethiopia that he was set to preside over in South Africa on Saturday, October 8.

Uhuru wrote a letter to African Union Chairman, Mousa Faki, stating that the talks collided with his schedule where he had other prior commitments.

“Regrettably, I wish to notify your good office that I will not be able to attend the AU-Convened Peace Talks scheduled for October 8, 2022, in South Africa owing to conflicts in my schedule.

“However, in the interim and as you consider the possibility of another date for the peace talks, I would be grateful to receive further clarity on the structure and modalities of the talks, including but not limited to the rules of engagement for all the interlocutors invited,” the retired president wrote.

He further asked the mediators to consider rescheduling the peace talks, stating that he would be grateful to receive further clarity on the structure and modalities of the talks, including but not limited to the rules of engagement for all the interlocutors invited.

The clarification, he stated, would prepare him for his engagement and participation.

Uhuru, along with former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, and former South Africa's Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka was set to mediate between the warring Ethiopian government and Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), who had already agreed to the peace talks.
