Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua did not hide his feelings while he gave his inaugural speech as the new second in command after taking his oath of office on Tuesday, September 13.

Gachagua attacked retired President Uhuru Kenyatta in front of 60,000 Kenyans inside Kasarani stadium and a host of VIPs, accusing him of leaving office when the economy was weakened.

According to him, Uhuru's government left a big hole in the country's economy which he admitted that President William Ruto's administration would struggle to revive.

"The truth of the matter is that we have inherited a dilapidated economy which almost facing shut down. We have a huge task to liberate this country and bring it back to where Kibaki left it.

"We have talked to the treasury, and the coffers are empty. We will have to start from scratch," he said.

Gachagua further accused Uhuru's government of leading intimidations against leaders associated with Kenya Kwanza.

However, he assured Kenyans that Ruto's government would free those who had been subject to intimidation and ensure that they are not threatened again by state agencies.

"I want to tell the people of Kenya that today is a great day. Kenya is now a democratic country. It became a crime to be a friend of William Ruto. You are finally free," Gachagua stated.

"I want to tell public servants and Kenyans that from now you don't have to talk via WhatsApp in fear of being recorded and prosecuted by the state agencies."

Gachagua acknowledged that the task before him would not be an easy one and advised Kenyans not to compare him to Ruto in terms of performance

“I know I'm getting in shoes that are almost impossible to fill... I beg the people of Kenya not to measure me with the performance of William Ruto because you might be disappointed," he added.

Earlier, Gachagua disclosed that he has had to embark on losing his weight by hitting the gym owing to the sharp criticism in recent months. He has also had to embark on revamping his dress code.
