Kenyans will start occupying some of the houses under the Affordable Housing Program (AHP) from January 2025, according to Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

The Affordable Housing Programme is a priority programme by the Government and aimed at facilitating citizens access decent, safe and affordable housing. According to Kindiki, the national annual demand for housing stands at 250,000 units against an annual market production of 50,000 units.

"To address this challenge, the Government is implementing the affordable housing programme that includes the social housing project to cater for the low income earners," Kindiki announced in a statement on Wednesday, December 18.

"100 housing projects in 45 Counties that will yield 135,515 units are in various stages of completion, providing job opportunities for more than 200,000 people as part of the Government’s job creation initiative."

Furthermore, the DP revealed that the ongoing housing projects have availed more than Ksh4 billion worth of work for the Jua Kali sector and accelerated growth in the manufacturing of cement, steel and other construction materials.

"550,000 citizens have registered for home ownership through the Boma Yangu platform and the allocation process will begin once the housing projects are complete," he added.

"The Government is expanding the housing programme to match the demand and supply for affordable and dignified housing. From January 2025, some of the housing projects will be ready for commissioning, allocation and occupation by the new home owners."

Kindiki spoke after he held a status and appraisal briefing on the AHP program and the coordination of various role players for effective and seamless implementation of the ongoing projects, at the Official Deputy President's residence in Karen.

Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development Alice Wahome, Principal Secretaries; Nixon Korir (Lands), Susan Mang’eni (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development) and other senior government officials were present.

Kindiki's sentiments come days after the Head of the Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy Dennis Itumbi revealed that since September 2024, more than 1,200 affordable housing units have been successfully completed.

Itumbi revealed that the program's role is to increase the number of mortgages in Kenya from 30,000 to one million, aimed at increasing homeownership and making housing more accessible to a greater number of people.

On Tuesday, August 6, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed stated that as of August 6, 2024, 531,943 Kenyans were saving over Ksh2.255 billion under the Boma Yangu initiative.
