President William Ruto's administration launched Moi Stadium in Embu on Wednesday, May 31 just in time for the Madaraka Day celebrations set for Thursday, June 1.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, during an address to the media, revealed that the stadium was built at a cost of Ksh476 million.

The upgrading was also done in a record period of 15 weeks, setting the stage for a new era in terms of construction technology.

"We are very happy with how this project has been undertaken in a record 15 weeks for Ksh476 million. We have been able to completely transform the face of this facility," stated Namwamba.

The CS further noted that the government was able to revamp the playing surface as well as the terraces surrounding the pitch which can sustain a capacity of 9,500 people.

"In those 15 weeks, we have been able to redo the playing surface fitted with a pop irrigation technology.

"We have been able also to do terraces around the field with a capacity of 9,500 seats. We have identified extra spaces to extend that capacity to 15,000," the CS added.

The CS further noted that the stadium features five VIP lounges, including a presidential-level and deputy-presidential section.

The lounges are also self-contained with state-of-the-art facilities that meet international levels for hosting government and sports events. Besides revamping the lounges and waiting bays, the contractor also increased the parking facilities and stadium lighting system.

Namwamba thanked the Head of State for completing his first stadium project under a splendid fixed timeline, adding that Embu's Moi Stadium had set Kenya at the right stage in preparing to host international events, including football and athletics.

On June 1, Kenyans began arriving at the stadium as early as 5.00 am in time for the celebrations, determined to secure their spot at the upgraded stadium.

The venue for Madaraka Day Celebration was changed from Njukiri ASK Showground to Moi Stadium due to reasons related to the time and cost of constructing a new stadium at Njukiri, in Embu.

Madaraka Day Celebrations

Madaraka Day is a significant celebration in Kenya, marking the day when the country attained internal self-rule in 1963. On this day, Kenyans celebrate the freedom fighters who fought tirelessly for their nation's liberation from colonial rule.

It is a day to honour their sacrifices and reflect on the progress made since attaining self-rule.

Madaraka Day celebrations also provide an opportunity for the president to address the nation and reflect on the country's progress.

Esteemed guests, including government officials and community leaders, take to the stage to deliver speeches and emphasized the importance of unity, peace, and development for the nation's future.

Following President William Ruto’s order in 2022, the festivities now extend beyond the stadium celebration, with exhibitions showcasing Kenya's achievements in various fields.

Local entrepreneurs proudly presented their creations, ranging from handcrafted artwork to innovative technological advancements. These exhibitions provided a platform for Kenyans to appreciate and support local talent while promoting economic growth within the country.

The theme for the 60th Madaraka Day celebrations is Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which is a change from the earlier-set Affordable Healthcare.
