Kenyan television journalist and media manager, Joe Ageyo, named 16 personalities who played a key role in the growth of his media career, 25 years since he joined the media industry after graduating from university.

The current Editorial Director at Nation Media Group (NMG) on Thursday, August 10 first credited Chams Media Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Alex Chamwada for beginning the media journey alongside him when they both joined the newsroom on the same day.

According to Ageyo, the two became buddies in the media space in Kenya and walked with each other through a number of media houses such as Royal Media Services where he worked as Editorial Director, the Standard Group as Managing Editor (KTN News) and the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) as a Senior Reporter.

"So on a day like this 25 years ago, Alex Chamwada and I walked into a newsroom for the first time, to begin what would turn out to be two extremely exciting careers.

"Today, Chamwada runs a media organisation he founded a few years ago - well, I run some things here and there too, but I am truly grateful to God for grace and favour," Ageyo stated.

Ageyo then proceeded to thank 15 other media personalities who made him into the revered journalist in Kenya that he is today. They included, among others:

  1. Frida Karoney
  2. Emmanuel Juma
  3. Hiram Mucheke
  4. Joe Odindo
  5. Latifah Ngunjiri
  6. Jemimah Mungai
  7. Lore Loolio
  8. Isaiya Kabira
  9. Hiram Mucheke
  10. John Nyongesa
  11. Bernard Otieno
  12. The late Ken Walibora
  13. Christine Nguku
  14. Mercy Oburu
  15. Kathleen Openda

"And of course to you out here who cheer me on, hold my feet to the fire and generally express whatever opinion about what I do or don't  - I salute you too. You are the reason I keep doing what I do," he told his fans and followers.

Ageyo moved from Citizen TV to the NMG's famous Twin Towers in Nairobi in March 2022 and was in charge of the editorial functions of NMG’s broadcast operations in Kenya across multimedia platforms prior to his promotion to the Editorial Director role on November 4, 2022.

He is currently responsible for driving newsroom transformation and managing all editorial operations.

He also spearheaded editorial functions at Royal Media Services (RMS), having joined in 2018 as the company was restructuring following the exit of his predecessor and former Cabinet Secretary for Lands, Farida Karoney.

Ageyo served as Editorial Director at RMS for the past four years from KTN, where he had risen from general news reporter to managing editor.

He joined KTN in 2000 and rose from reporter to deputy news editor before leaving in 2005 and joining NTV. He returned to KTN in 2012 after seven years.

In 2001 he took home the Environmental Journalist of the Year award.

“I leave tonight an extremely proud man, proud of the mountains we’ve scaled together, proud of the many shoulders there were to lean on when the ride took us to the valley. I have had the privilege of leading the most formidable news team on Kenyan television, the most diverse news team on radio and no doubt a force to reckon with in the digital space too. A salute to my fellow directors and the teams they lead,” he stated during his final NewsGang show on Thursday, March 10.

“And finally, to the ever-vigilant public without whom, this job would be worthless. Thank you for keeping me on toes. But tonight, I must step out, to answer to a new calling, true to the Shakespearean wisdom that “all the world is a stage, and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts.”
