The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the temporary closure of a section of Uhuru Highway in Nairobi County, affecting traffic flow between the University Way and Kenyatta Avenue roundabouts.

In a notice dated Friday, February 28, KeNHA Director General Kungu Ndung’u announced that the road would be closed for one and a half hours on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM.

He explained that the closure was necessary due to a planned procession by the Institute of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) to mark World Engineering Day.

“KeNHA would like to inform the public of a temporary closure of Uhuru Highway at the section between University Way and Kenyatta Avenue roundabouts on the Mombasa-bound carriageway on Tuesday, March 4, 2025,” the KeNHA boss notified motorists.

To mitigate the anticipated traffic congestion, the authority recommended that motorists traveling towards Mombasa exit Uhuru Highway at the Boulevard Hotel, take Harry Thuku Road, proceed to Moi Avenue, then Kenyatta Avenue, and rejoin the highway at the Kenyatta Avenue roundabout.

Alternatively, drivers were advised to use the University Way roundabout, continue onto Nyerere Road, then Processional Way, and merge back onto the highway at the Kenyatta Avenue roundabout.

Motorists intending to use the highway were advised to exercise caution when approaching the affected section and adhere to the suggested traffic management plan.

Additionally, Ndung’u stated that police officers and traffic marshals would be stationed to direct drivers and enforce traffic regulations against any violations.

“KeNHA advises motorists to approach the section with caution and follow the proposed traffic management plan herein as well as cooperate with the police and traffic marshals on site,” the KeNHA Director General stated.

KeNHA, in another notice on the same day, revealed that motorists using the Juja-Gatundu Road will be affected by an upcoming traffic disruption. The road will be inaccessible for four days, from Friday, February 28, to Monday, March 3.

The authority stated that the closure is necessary to facilitate the installation of a cross culvert.

"The KeNHA would like to inform the public that Juja-Gatundu Road will be temporarily closed from Juja Stage Junction to Gatundu. This is to allow for installation of the cross culvert as from Friday, February 28, 2025, at 10.00 pm to Monday, March 3, 2025, at 8.00 pm," said the agency.

Drivers were encouraged to take alternative routes. KeNHA indicated that traffic on the Juja-Gatundu Road would be redirected via the diversion at Equity Afia Medical Centre (Juja) Road, connecting back to Juja-Gatundu Road and Mucatha Road.

Motorists can also use the Jomo Kenyatta University Way roundabout to access Thika Superhighway.
