As a man, how far are you really allowed to go to win over the woman of your dreams; be it your girlfriend or one you consider your future wife? Because every woman is different, different surprise ideas come into play, and some have been known to spark conversations across the country.

This is what happened on Wednesday, March 1 when one Celine Kariuki, a video creator and brand ambassador, was treated to a dinner costing Ksh56,500 and gifted 300 roses by her boyfriend who was proposing to her to formalize the relationship.

Kariuki took to her Instagram stories to show off the huge bundle of flowers as she was led to a waiting Toyota Landcruiser Prado, with a hotel bellman holding the door for her to enter as the couple drove to their dinner location.

According to the bill which she also shared, the couple had ordered five 750-millilitre bottles of still water priced at Ksh600 each and a quantity of beef carpaccio costing Ksh3,500, an ostrich at Ksh3,500, tomahawk (steak) at Ksh9,000, ribeye at Ksh8,000, cremeux at Ksh1,800, baked white chocolat at Ksh1,200, cappuccino and caffe latte each costing Ksh5,000.

The most expensive item they ordered was a Moet & Chandon Imperial Brut Champagne which cost Ksh25,000. This is compared to some online stores which sell 750ml of the drink at about Ksh9,800 and Ksh18,500 for a 1.5 litre.

Taking Value Added Tax (VAT) out of the equation, the couple would have paid Ksh45,472, with Ksh7,275 charged as VAT, 5.5% service charge costing Ksh1,246.96 and 7% service charge costing Ksh1,596.

The bill as well as the date sparked various reactions on social media divided into two sides; Kenyan women wishing they would be treated like Kariuki by their men and Kenyan men being tormented with pressure to win over their women, especially after the cake contained a proposal written: "Will you be my girlfriend?"

"God of Celine Kariuki, it’s me again! Jamani msichana alipelekwa dinner date jana usiku (Yesterday a girl was taken out for a date), they spent Ksh56k. She received 300 roses & the guy was asking her to be his gf officially! P for Pressure," Njambi wrote.

"Love is a beautiful thing, a Kenyan man surprises his girlfriend with 300 roses and Kesh 56,500 dinner. Simping is very expensive," Ranjini Nicholas weighed in.

A peruse by Viral Tea on Kariuki's Instagram profile reveals that she has a penchant for the soft life with a lifestyle that might be comparable to Kenya's rich youth or their counterparts in developed countries.

It is worth it to note that on the following day, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua revealed the little-known simplicity of his relationship with his wife, Pastor Dorcas Gachagua, complementing her for living an easy-going life as a woman, even in the Generation Z era.

While disclosing how her calm demeanour led to their blissful union, the second-in-command revealed that he does not need to spend too much on his better half, as she herself does not demand too much from him. For instance, the Deputy President only funds her Ksh3,000 to style her hair.

Gachahgua claimed that due to the current economic hardships, women are no longer being pampered with trips to the salon leaving them to cover their heads.

He further called upon men to take care of their wives by simply giving them the money they need without hesitation, question and accountability in return.

“A woman is about cloth and wallet. If they have money, this head-covering thing will only be worn on Sundays. Other days they will be taken to town and be put in a sauna,” the DP stated during the launch of the Women Enterprise Fund and the second product of the Hustler Fund at KICC, Nairobi.

“You need to take care of your wives. At times just give her Ksh3,000 and do not ask her what she will do with it. I am told nowadays men are asking for accountability even for Ksh1,000.”

Some men have these days taken matters into their own hands by making women pay for their dates given that for years, women have been taking advantage of the dates for freebies.
