“My driver and Sammy soldier (the bodyguard) were part of the accident victims at Londiani where more than 50 people lost their lives and a similar number in critical condition at various hospitals in Rift Valley.

"Our hearts go out to families who lost loved ones with heartfelt condolences and prayers,” Kidero said in the statement.

Kidero however indicated that his driver, Christiano, and bodyguard, Sammy Wuod Asumbi, survived the grisly road accident and expressed his relief.

“We thank God for the lives of Christiano the driver and Sammy soldier Wuod Asumbi. We continue to pray that God Will continue to oversee safety on our roads,” Kidero added.

Preliminary reports indicated that the truck at 6.30 pm rammed into four matatus, two lorries, a personal vehicle and a bus, leaving an ugly scene according to photos of the crash shared on social media.

It was heading to Kericho before it lost control and veered off the road, ramming into tens of hawkers who were busy along the Nakuru-Kericho highway.

Peter Otieno, one of the drivers present along the Kericho-Nakuru highway, gave a harrowing account of the events that led to the horrific tragedy, noting that he swerved to the side to avoid colliding with the ill-fated trailer head on but the vehicles behind him were not as lucky.

“I was approaching the junction and I saw the speeding trailer heading towards me. I avoided the head-on collision by swerving.

"The driver of the Mitsubishi Canter behind me thought I was parking to buy from the roadside traders so he proceeded to overtake and crashed into the oncoming trailer," recounted Otieno.

That miscalculation proved fatal as not only did the overtaking vehicle ram his vehicle but triggered a chain of events as the trailer lost control, leading to the accident.

“After the collision, the Mistubishi Canter hit my vehicle and the trailer that lost control crashed into several vehicles and roadside traders,” he went on.

Otieno explained that he narrowly escaped death adding, "I have seen over 20 bodies laying dead on the ground but there were more crashed under the trailer."

Londiani OCPD Agnes Kunga revealed that more than 60 people have so far been rushed to different hospitals in Londiani, Kericho and Nakuru where they are currently receiving treatment. Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen on his part visited the accident scene on Saturday morning in the company of other officials.

Data by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Thursday, June 29 indicated at least 2,124 fatalities recorded between January and June 2023, with pedestrian lives lost revealed at 729, the majority of the fatalities.
