Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki on Friday, June 30 directed all police officers to enforce traffic rules after at least 48 people were confirmed dead in the Londiani multiple car accident.

In a statement, Kindiki penned his heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loves ones in the tragic road accident.

He also sympathised with those who survived the crash, wishing them a speedy recovery as they received medical care.

"The fatal road accident at Londiani Junction in Kericho County this Friday evening is a tragedy that marks a dark end to the month of June 2023. Heartfelt condolences to families and friends of the deceased.

"Speedy recovery to all survivors of the accident, who are receiving medical care in various facilities in Kericho and Nakuru Counties," he stated in part.

Kindiki consequently called upon all Kenyan motorists to follow traffic rules to the letter and to be cautious while driving along the roads, warning against speeding and dangerous driving, especially within town centres with speed limits capped at 50km/hr.

He also ordered police officers across the country to arrest those found breaking traffic rules, with specific focus to unroadworthy vehicles which he established Kenyans were prone to driving.

"I urge all road users to strictly adhere to traffic rules. I particularly appeal to drivers to exercise extreme caution, and desist from speeding, overloading and dangerous or careless driving.

"Police officers across the country are directed to enforce traffic rules firmly and apprehend all offenders flouting traffic rules, including but not limited to those driving defective and unroadworthy motor vehicles," he added.

Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen on his part visited the accident scene on Saturday morning, July 1 in the company of other officials.

Preliminary reports indicated that the truck at 6.30 pm lost control, ramming into pedestrians, business people and matatus which were parked by the roadside.

The truck rammed into four matatus, two lorries, a personal vehicle and bus, leaving an ugly scene according to photos of the crash shared on social media.

It was heading to Kericho before it lost control and veered off the road, ramming into tens of hawkers who were busy along the Nakuru-Kericho highway.

According to eye witnesses, the driver of the truck was trying to avoid hitting a bus that was parked on the road after developing a mechanical hitch before losing control.

Londiani OCPD Agnes Kunga revealed that more than 60 people have so far been rushed to different hospitals in Londiani, Kericho and Nakuru where they are currently receiving treatment.

Last evening, rescue efforts were slowed by heavy rains being witnessed at the scene.

President William Ruto led the nation in mourning with the families who have lost loved ones in the horrific road accident.

"It is distressing that some of the fatalities are young people with a promising future and business people who were on their daily chores. We pray for the speedy recovery of all survivors; you are in our thoughts. We urge motorists to be extra cautious on roads, especially now when we are experiencing heavy rainfall," stated Ruto on social media.
