Defending his call, the CS noted that this would allow the government to accord a joint burial to both of the heroes.

Trade Cabinet Secretary (CS) Moses Kuria on Friday, May 5 called upon the British government to work with President William Ruto's administration to identify where the late Dedan Kimathi, a legendary Mau Mau freedom fighter, was buried.

Speaking after eulogising Kimathi's widow, Mukami Kimathi, who passed away on Thursday, May 4, Kuria likewise called for the exhumation of Kimathi's body.

Defending his call, the CS noted that this would allow the government to accord a joint burial to both of the heroes.

"I believe firmly that it is still possible, probably with the support of the British government, to identify the exact place he was buried so that as we mourn Mukami, we should have Kimathi’s remains exhumed for a joint burial," Kuria told the press at Lee Funeral, Nairobi.

Mukami's daughter, Evelyne Kimathi, had earlier revealed that her mother's last wish was that Dedan Kimathi's body be released from Kamiti Maximum Security Prison and given a dignified burial.

Prior to her death, Mukami had also requested the government to help her trace Dedan Kimathi's grave, noting that it was her family's wish to bury their kin who played a vital role in securing Kenya's independence in 1963.

Kuria also called for proper recognition of freedom fighters in the country, as well as conclusively addressing the issue surrounding their compensation.

According to the CS, the government was to kickstart a plan to support the late Mukami in mid-May 2023, which was the week before she died.

"Under the leadership of the deputy president, we had our plans which were actually supposed to launch next week to support this family. The legacy of Dedan Kimathi and Mukami Kimathi must be institutionalized," he added.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua mourned Mukami as a symbol of resilience, an icon of the country's freedom and that Kenyans would treasure her life here on earth.

"As we prepare to bury the late Mukami, we continue to bother about the land question that thousands of Kenyans who fought for independence live in poverty despite the fact that the British Government had set aside land for their resettlement.

"These are questions that in the coming days, we shall continue to have discussions on how these historical injustices can be addressed," Gachagua stated.

The DP announced that plans for Mukami's funeral arrangements would be overseen by the State and that a senior government official would be appointed to coordinate the burial arrangements which he hinted will be fully catered for by the State.

"The senior official will work with the family to give Mukami a befitting send-off," he added.
