Maize flour will now retail at Ksh100 from today (Monday, July 18) following the government's gigantic subsidy to millers.

In a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture seen by Viral Tea, the government directed that all retailers should sell two kilograms of the popular food product at Ksh100 from Ksh230.

“The recommended retail price of flour is should not exceed Ksh100 for a 2kg packet, Ksh250 for a 5kg packet and Ksh490 for a 10kg packet," read the directive in part.

The statement also revealed that a one-kilogramme packet of maize flour should be sold for not more than Ksh52 and not more than Ksh30 for a 500-gram packet.

"It is agreed between the parties that the ministry shall deploy market surveillance teams to ensure that sifted maize flour is sold at the maximum recommended retail price stated.

"The market price of maize (per 90kg bag) as at the date of this contract is in the range of Ksh5,800 and Ksh6,000. Based on this market price, MOALFC will compensate the miller for each unit sold," added the statement.

However, the directive will only be applicable for a month after which it's only a waiting game to see whether or not the prices would have retreated to the usual market rates.

The new directive comes as a reprieve to Kenyans who have been complaining over the high cost of living ranging from maize and wheat flour, sugar, cooking oil, tissue paper, milk, groceries, and bread.

This has been a ripple effect of the high cost of fuel. However, President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, July 14 directed that the fuel prices will remain unchanged for the next month.

The price of Super Petrol will remain at Ksh159.12 per litre while Diesel will remain at Ksh140 per litre. Kerosene will remain at Ksh127.94 per litre.

“With today’s presidential action, diesel will continue to retail at Ksh140.00, petrol at Ksh159.12 and Kerosene at Ksh127.94. Without such State interventions, the pump prices would have been Ksh193.64 for diesel, Ksh209.95 for petrol and Ksh181.13 for Kerosene," read the State House statement in part.

"As a caring government, we will continue to roll out similar actions so as to provide further direct relief to all Kenyan families and establish the necessary safeguards for protecting Kenyan consumers from further increases in the cost of living."
