Malala: Why Gachagua Asked Ex-CS Yatani For Ksh1.5 Billion

UDA Secretary-General Cleophas Malala on Thursday, March 9 came to the defence of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yatani implicated the DP's office, claiming that he got a request of Ksh1.5 billion immediately after he assumed office.

Speaking on Citizen TV, Malala asserted that the money was meant for use by the Office of the Deputy President and not for Gachagua's personal use.

He noted that the DP's office was underfunded as a result of the strained relationship between President William Ruto and former head of state Uhuru Kenyatta, with the latter even stripping away some of the privileges the former enjoyed when he was the second-in-command.

"The reason Ksh1.5 billion was requested two days after the elections, is you know very well the previous tenure had taken all the budget elements from the office of the Deputy President.

"President Uhuru Kenyatta had taken away even the hospitality budget from William Ruto's office of the DP. Therefore, by the time Gachagua was being sworn in as the Deputy President, there was no money in that office and that is why they took back the budget which was there before the swearing-in to the DP's office," Malala explained.

He further noted that the office of the DP has many other things that need to be financed including buying and maintaining vehicles, thus he expressed that Ksh1.5 billion was too little.

Yatani had dragged Gachagua into the saga that he was roped into when Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang'o revealed how she was coerced into approving the release of Ksh15 billion to various state officers days before the August 2022 elections.

While applauding Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang'o for uncovering the shocking claims on Tuesday, March 7, Malala boldly accused Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga and his cronies of bleeding out the public coffers while demanding that former President Uhuru's government provide an audit of all the capital projects undertaken during that regime.

"Odinga and his friends are responsible for pilfering public coffers to their dry bone. We demand that the handshake regime account for the monies they stole because they used Ukur Yatani to steal the money to fund Raila's Presidential campaign and brutalize Kenyans who demanded accountability.

"The Kenyan people deserve leaders who are honest and accountable, not those who use their position to enrich themselves at the expense of the people," he added.

UDA also called upon any state officer or office holder that was coerced or intimidated to sign or illegally transact public monies to come out and confess and for Raila and Uhuru to take responsibility for their actions and repay the money they have stolen.

The party also asked Kenyans not to be hoodwinked and used by selfish leaders to advance their parochial egoistic interests, while calling upon the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to commence investigations on former senior government officials.

"We urge the anti-graft agencies to hastily commence investigations in light of the revelations by the Controller of Budget and unearth all the corrupt leaders and their accomplices. We also demand an audit of all the capital projects undertaken by the rogue handshake regime in view of ascertaining whether public funds were expended on private businesses.

"The investigations should also not be limited to pilferage on public funds but the deliberate collapse of institutions, repatriation of looted money stashed on offshore accounts and suspicious tax exemptions by compromised officers at KRA," added the statement.
