An unfortunate incident occurred on Monday, January 15 when a man in a towel was captured jumping from a window in a five-storey building in Mombasa County.

In the video that was recorded by residents and circulated on social media platforms, the man could be seen standing on the window of the fourth floor and looking down, with people shouting and begging him not to jump.

However, despite their pleas, the man jumped and landed with a loud thud on vehicles parked outside the building before falling onto the tarmacked road.

"Did that man jump from the building?" one of the passersby could be heard asking in the video.

Residents from the building gazed down from their balconies in shock after the loud thud drew their attention, made to witness the man lying on the ground.

By the time of publishing this story, it was unclear if the man lost his life in the fall. The police were also yet to comment on the matter.

The unfortunate incident came amidst an atmosphere of worry regarding the rising cases of suicide in recent months across the country.

A report by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) released on August 2023 indicated that a majority of the cases were caused by unemployment, the high cost of living and alcoholism.

Psychiatrists responded by launching counselling programmes to prevent further loss of lives.

On Sunday, January 14, a 28-year-old woman jumped off her third-floor apartment balcony in Lang'ata, Nairobi in what police termed as a case of suspected suicide.

Notably, in August 2023, an engineering student from Mwembe Tayari in Mombasa County set himself on fire in response to harsh economic conditions, in full glare of residents and motorists.

Despite being rescued by members of the public and the fire put out, the student succumbed to his injuries a day later.

Counsellors, medics, and psychologists advise that you can always reach out for help when experiencing any mental health issue. Call the Kenya Red Cross toll-free hotline, 1199, for support.
