Motorists on Sunday, June 25 resorted to using the railway to avoid an overnight traffic snarl-up in Naivasha which forced a section of them to spend the night on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

Reports had indicated that the snarl-up had begun at Kikopey, Gilgil, as the Safari Rally championships came to a close on Day 2.

To beat the traffic, some motorists had resorted to using the railway line at Gilgil though getting past a perilous crossing at the bridge as the rest of the massive trucks using the weighbridge largely blamed for the snarl-up stood still along the road.

Meanwhile, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) issued a traffic advisory to motorists using Nairobi-Nakuru Highway over the ongoing traffic snarl-up.

In a statement, the authority cautioned over the heavy traffic congestion between Naivasha and Nakuru as a result of the World Rally Championship (WRC) event set to conclude on Sunday, June 25.

The authority asked motorists travelling to Nakuru from Naivasha and vice versa to use alternative routes; Naivasha-Njabini-Olkalou-Ol Joro Orok - Lanet - Nakuru road.

“The Northern Corridor, between Naivasha and Nakuru, is experiencing heavy traffic congestion. This has been occasioned by a heavy traffic influx attributed to the World Rally Championship event in Naivasha.

“Those travelling to Nakuru from Naivasha are advised to use the Naivasha - Njabini - Olkalou - Ol Joro Orok - Lanet - Nakuru road and vice versa,” the statement read in part.

The authority indicated further that traffic police officers were positioned along the highway to guide motorists stuck on the highway by encouraging lane discipline.

"Accordingly, motorists are advised to exercise lane discipline and avoid overlapping as they approach this section in order to avoid further congestion. We are monitoring the situation and will keep updating regularly," added KeNHA.

Gilgil Police boss Francis Tumbo indicated that about 2,000 motorists, many of who were at Sleepy Warriors to enjoy the rally, joined the highway at the same time, causing the snarl-up.

"The traffic jam is heavy but it is moving and police officers are on the highway to ensure that there is no unnecessary congestion," he stated.
