Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala is mourning the loss of his brother.

The CS took to social media on Thursday morning, September 1 to announce that his eldest brother, Sheikh Salim Mohamed Abdallah Balala, has passed on.

He has however not revealed the cause of Sheikh's death.

"It is with great sadness to announce the death of my eldest brother, Sheikh Salim Mohamed Abdallah Balala. The late Sheikh Salim is the father to Salaah Balala, Abdallah Balala, Taufiq Balala, Mohammed Balala and 3 daughters.

"He is also brother to Hussein Balala (deceased), Talal Balala, Jalal Balala,  Abdulnasser Balala, myself, and our 3 sisters," he wrote.

CS Balala announced that prayers will be held at Shibu Mosque - Mwembe Tayari Mombasa at 10 am later today and burial at Kikowani Muslim cemetery thereafter. 

"May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un (Indeed, to God we belong and to God we shall return)," he added.

Friends and family have since sent condolences to the CS and his family following the loss.

“My sincere condolences. May God grant him his infinite mercy and welcome him to his eternal paradise. My deepest sympathy with you and the whole family. May God grant you comfort and patience,” tweeted Mohamed Salim.

“Pole to the family. Sad to note that the sisters’ and daughters’ names are not listed,” Amakove Wala weighed in.

Outgoing Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho also sent a message of condolence to Balala’s family.

“Mombasa mourns the passing on of yet another of its gallant sons. Salim Mohamed Abdallah Balala,” Joho shared.

The late Sheikh Salim was a nominated Member of Parliament (MP) and also served as an Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning from 1966 to 1974 under the late founding President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.

Najib, a former Mvita Constituency MP, has been the longest-serving Minister for Tourism, a position that he held from the beginning of 2008 until March 26, 2012, when he was dismissed during a reshuffle of cabinet.

He formed The Republican Congress Party of Kenya (RC) in April 2012 that became a principal partner in the Jubilee coalition with President Uhuru Kenyatta (TNA), William Ruto and Charity Ngilu.

He was appointed the CS for Mining between 2013 and 2015 before returning to the Ministry of Tourism as its CS in June 2015 where he has been since.
