Police on Monday, May 13 launched investigations into a harrowing incident in which a prominent businessman and philanthropist in Nairobi was robbed of valuables of an undisclosed amount and Ksh300,000 in cash.

The businessman, Moses Mwenda, complained to Muthaiga Police Station after falling victim to the armed robbery which he claimed occurred outside an entertainment joint along Kiambu Road.

He described the nature of his attackers while revealing the items that he had lost during the ordeal.

"Yesternight was a bad night for me, lost money, a laptop, documents and very expensive valuables at a serious gunpoint near a fun joint at Kiambu Road by a group of around 8 people. Something strange, among the group two had shotguns & handicap, others with knives," Mwenda stated in his Facebook post on Saturday, May 11.

Mwenda alleged that much to his surprise, he was informed that investigations at Muthaiga Police Station pointed out the two armed individuals being officers from the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) with more investigations aiming to unravel the identities of the rest of the gang.

"However I'm very safe only losing money & serious items. The car they were using was well captured on CCTV and now the police are on the matter," he added.

"Let's be careful around Kiambu Road because I found out there are several recorded incidents involving the same car where someone else was seriously injured."

Mwenda on Monday detailed the extent of his losses, revealing that the assailants, armed with firearms, handcuffs, and knives, also made off with Ksh300,000 in cash and valuable jewellery.

Despite escaping physical harm, the businessman, also an aspiring politician, emphasized the profound impact the incident had on him.

The 32-year-old promptly reported the robbery the following day, to Muthaiga Police Station, as investigations sought to expose leads that would aid in apprehending the perpetrators.

Simon Wanyoike, the investigating officer from Muthaiga Police Station, confirmed that authorities swiftly responded to the scene and gathered witness statements. Efforts are now underway to secure CCTV footage to aid in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.

"We received the report on Saturday, May 11, and swiftly proceeded to the crime scene. We managed to get statements from witnesses who observed the theft and are yet to retrieve all the information from the CCTV footage. Already we have found an expert who will help us retrieve the information," Wanyoike was quoted by TUKO.co.ke.

KWS was yet to respond to Mwenda's allegations by the time of publishing this story. This is not the first time law enforcement agencies have been involved in robbery cases, most of which of late have seen thugs dress up as police officers themselves.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) based in Juja on Saturday, May 10, 2023, exposed the identity of a suspect believed to be part of a gang who posed as police officers and robbed Ksh4 million from a Chinese couple in their car.

The suspect was part of a five-man gang that included three men dressed in police uniforms. The gang had pounced on the couple who had withdrawn the cash from a bank in Nairobi and were on their way to Juja for work on Friday, June 9, 2023.
