Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi and a group of other politicians faced rejection on Sunday, April 13, when a presiding bishop at a Githunguri church refused to let them speak to the congregation, citing the tense political environment.

Sudi had joined other leaders at PCEA Githaithi church in Githunguri for a fundraiser aimed at building a new church.

Despite expectations that the politicians would be given a platform to speak, Bishop Peter Kinyanjui firmly shut it down, making it clear that political speeches wouldn't be allowed during the service.

"As you have seen in the country in recent months, the PCEA church was in fact among the first to say that politicians should not speak at the pulpit," the bishop said.

He went on to cite the Kapseret MP as an example of how politicians often shift focus in churches by changing the agenda to suit their own interests.

He added, "Why? Because politicians will bring other agendas. For example, if I bring out Sudi, he will speak on other issues, and the church sermon will be forgotten."

The bishop doubled down on his criticism of Sudi, warning him against making his donation pledges a public spectacle.

Following the bishop’s remarks, Sudi — clearly the main target of Reverend Kinyanjui’s caution — was spotted leaning in to speak to the bishop, seemingly requesting a quick opportunity to address the congregation.

Despite the earlier restrictions, Sudi was eventually allowed to speak. In his remarks, he acknowledged that the ban on politicians speaking in churches was largely a consequence of their own behavior.

"Bishop, you've enforced what I have been thinking of all this while," the lawmaker said, adding, "And it is us politicians who have spoilt it for ourselves because we talk politics in church."

"But let me just reiterate, maybe the bishop does not know me, but I am a Christian. What you have done is right, and it is we politicians who ruined everything by speaking politics in church."

Sudi revealed that ahead of Sunday’s church event, the politicians had agreed there would be zero political speeches during the service.

Ironically, even though they were told not to make their donations public, a few of the politicians' pledges were still announced to the congregation after Sudi’s short speech — a move that seemed to ease the friction between the political guests and the church leadership.

What happened at PCEA Githaithi mirrored a similar incident on March 16, when former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja were barred from speaking at an ACK church service in Makadara.

Back then, ACK Archbishop Jackson Ole Sapit made it clear that politicians would no longer be allowed to speak in any ACK churches, declaring that political rhetoric had no place in their sanctuaries moving forward.
