Media personality Anita Nderu revealed on Monday, September 5 that her husband Barrett Raftery had purchased a camel for her mother as part of dowry negotiations.

While commemorating the first anniversary of their traditional wedding on Monday, September 5, Nderu penned a sweet message to her husband, reminiscing of the time that they shared muratina.

This a sweet-sour alcoholic beverage that is locally produced by fermentation and is one of the many Kenyan traditional beverages that has been recognised as part of the Kikuyu social, cultural and economic culture.

As for the camel, she disclosed that it was still in its new compound getting accustomed to the environs.

"A year ago today we were sipping muratina, sitting through endless negotiations and celebrating the merging of two cultures with our families, relatives, bride and groom tribe and close friends. So much has happened since then, it’s incredible how time flies beautifully when doing life with your person.

“The camel he got my mum is still chilling and making friends in her new home, took us a while to figure out how to make a camel a pet,” she wrote on Instagram.

Viral Tea did spot checks on the cost of one camel. It is an ideal mode of transport for nomadic communities in the arid and semi-arid regions of Kenya and is domesticated for milk, meat, hair and leather.

A mature camel cow costs around Ksh70,000 while a young calf, which has just been born goes for around Ksh50,000-Ksh60,000. The cost of a bull ranges between Ksh65,000-Ksh100,000 depending on the market.

So much has happened since that traditional wedding between Nderu and Raftery, from their exclusive wedding to recently welcoming their baby girl, Kaya Gacheri Raftery, who was delivered on Friday morning, August 26.

“I am no longer pregnant! Barrett Raftery and I finally got to meet our daughter Kaya Gacheri Catalina Raftery (Rap name: Nippy Suckle) on the 26th of August 2022 at 3:48 a.m.

"What a whirlwind couple of days it has been. We are elated beyond words, grateful and in love and awe of our little human. We're finally back home. Our rent-free housemate is about to reveal her true colours as she schools us through the 4th trimester. Parenthood 101 is now in session,” she wrote.

Nderu has been impressing her fans all through her pregnancy journey to the point of even sharing that she curated a whole music playlist in labour.

“I will be that person walking/crawling into my labour room with a JBL speaker, B with a cooler box and our squad of labour supporters and my over-packed hospital bag with all kinds of essentials whose use remains to be seen,” read part of her caption on the video.

She also revealed that she had imported her baby's clothing, adding that she enjoyed redecorating and researching baby’s outfits online.
