Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga on Tuesday, July 4 made three key changes to the planned Saba Saba rally on Friday, July 7.

Speaking to the press at Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka (SKM) Center, the Former Prime Minister revealed that instead of the demonstrations held solely in Nairobi on that day, the protests will take place across the country in select towns at the same time.

However, he did not reveal the towns which would stage the protests on that day.

"We are here to announce that our Kamukunji meeting will take place in Nairobi this Friday, as previously announced. However, this is not just a gathering in Nairobi; it is a nationwide Kamukunji where we will launch the Third Liberation," he revealed in a subsequent statement to newsrooms.

Furthermore, he announced that the rally will commence the start of signature collection campaigns to express its rejection of the Kenya Kwanza regime led by President William Ruto and its punitive tax policies.

"As we speak, the prices of fuel, food, and transportation are skyrocketing. In fact, the fare has already increased by 30 per cent. Fellow Kenyans, as resilient people, we refuse to suffer in silence. We do not bow down to dictators and beg for mercy. Even those who do still face humiliation and even death. So, we fight.

"We raise our voices loudly and clearly on issues that affect us. Therefore, we must fight, and our fight begins on Friday. Unity is crucial now more than ever. Together, we can achieve not only our desires but also what we rightfully deserve. From Friday onwards, let us move forward with unwavering determination, standing united and working together until the end," he added.

Raila distanced his coalition from participation in violence, noting that its engagement in pickets, protests, tax boycotts, and civil disobedience does not advocate violence, thus urging his supporters to picket peacefully on that day.

"We have never endorsed violence in the past, and we never will. We firmly believe in the law and the rule of law, and we will act within its boundaries. Our sole weapon is our sovereign power to protest, boycott, and engage in civil disobedience. We exercise this power starting on Friday, July 7," he went on.

Defending his coalition’s resolve to continue with civil disobedience, Raila assured Kenyans that the coalition is on the right side and the resolution is not a way of the coalition being wrong unless the law itself is wrong.

"The same law that establishes the government and its institutions, such as parliament, the courts, and the police, also permits us to protest, picket, boycott, and present petitions. We are within our rights, and we refuse to be intimidated," he added.

The opposition leader was flanked by Azimio la Umoja co-principals Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua.

On Tuesday, June 27, Azimio Principal Eugene Wamalwa revealed that the signature collection exercise will signal the withdrawal of its sovereignty from officials of the Kenya Kwanza regime including Ruto and all elected leaders who supported the Finance Bill 2023.

According to the opposing coalition, it will collect signatures from at least 1 million Kenyans who support self-determination. Raila noted that, if successful, they will then submit the signatures to local and international bodies, which will then decide whether or not to grant them their wish.

Azimio argued at the time that self-determination is the right of a people to freely determine their own political status and to pursue their own economic, social, and cultural development.
