The goons who invaded former President Uhuru Kenyatta's family farm - Northlands City Project - on Monday, March 27 turned out to be non-locals who held a meeting with unnamed leaders hours before the daring act.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, March 28, the locals, led by former Ruiru deputy mayor, Peter Mwaura disclosed that the thugs had been transported from Ruai - a sub-county in Nairobi.

The locals added that the goons had initially scheduled a meeting with the leaders at the Ruai Sewer Plant before heading to the property located along the Eastern Bypass in Ruiru, Kiambu County.

The goons were also reportedly promised tracts of land when they were transported to a hotel located near the farm. After they were dropped at the hotel, the majority of the armed goons proceeded to the private property on foot.

It was there that they cut down trees and stole 1,400 heads of Dorper sheep worth up to 70 million, which were sold to passers-by for a throwaway price of Ksh1,000.

The Dorper is a hardy South African composite breed, it is a cross between the Black-headed Persian ewes and the Dorset Horn rams. Interestingly, the name comes from the combination of the syllables from the parent breeds- Dorset and Persian.

According to farmers, they require little input and yield high returns. Also, the sheep are hardy and adapt quickly to the environment, and are non-selective grazers as well as ideal for mutton production resulting in high exports due to the low-fat scores.

Importantly, Dorper sheep are known for gaining weight at an impressive rate with some weighing 36 kilograms by the time they are four months old.

Mwaura had notably expressed shock over the lack of immediate response from police officers as soon as the news of the invasion broke out as well as the absence of officers protecting the property, noting the unusual circumstances under which it occurred.

He also wondered how the goons managed to slip through the fence into an area that would normally be teeming with officers when an unauthorized individual gains access.

"Ordinarily, if you attempt to step into that land, more than 10 police officers come there. We have Gatongora, Ruiru, and Ruai police Stations but the police were not there. It seemed weird to us," he stated.

The ex-deputy mayor also noted that locals were living in fear after the incident, expressing uncertainty over their return.

Backing up Mwaura's claims was Azimio la Umoja leader, Raila Odinga, who paid a visit to the farm and upon conversing with witnesses and representatives there, hinted at a sinister plot through the invasion.

"We have been told the criminals who invaded the farm are not residents of this place. They are strangers who were ferried here by lorries and buses.

"We have been told by the locals that the plan was to invade and stay on the land. We have been able to see a sample of the allocation documents that had already been made. It is no coincidence that the police were not there when the goons came," he noted.

Raila blamed the attack on Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung'wah and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who he accused of tarnishing the name of Mau Mau freedom fighters.

He stated that the demonstrations called against the government are not criminal acts, insisting that the opposition had tried to comply with the provisions of the law and that the attack "must be something that had been planned for a long period of time."

"Anyone behind the idea of grabbing land belonging to a Kenyan in this manner can not be said to be a leader of government if this is something that is being done under the hospices of the deputy president of this country. This country must be very sorry indeed," he added.

"This can not be done in the name of Mau Mau. Mau Mau was a movement for the liberation of this county and never fought against fellow Africans. Mau Mau was supposed to liberate this country from the occupation by colonialists who grabbed our land."

Police officers who arrived at the premise found several temporary iron sheet shacks erected by the invaders, as well as what appeared to have been a subdivision on the said land. The existing irrigation system on the land was also uprooted, and the pipes were then used to fence the land parcels.

The farm was raided by hundreds of unknown goons during the Azimio protests and its aftermath saw dozens of sheep stolen, trees cut down and later a portion of the property burnt down in a fire whose photos and videos were circulated across social media.
