President William Ruto's administration will embark on the construction of more than 200,000 houses every year earmarked for low-income earners.

Speaking on Tuesday, October 18 in Ongata Rongai when launching 734 apartments targeting ordinary Kenyans, Ruto said the project will create at least two million jobs.

This, he explained, will help address the unemployment crisis facing the youth, in addition to providing proper shelter for everyone.

"Half of those houses will be under the categories of affordable and social housing. We are going to work with the private sector developers and pension institutions and we are arranging finances for the purposes of mortgage," he stated.

He added that he would petition parliament to formulate laws that will reinstate the Housing Fund which will enable Kenyans to buy homes with financial backing from the state.

Furthermore, the housing project will also provide employment opportunities for the youths whose skills and expertise will be required in construction.

President Ruto noted that the Government identifies affordable housing as a priority “because it will make even Mama Mboga and boda boda own a house in Nairobi”.

He added that his administration will work with counties to ensure most Kenyans benefit.

He was inspecting the Kings Serenity Affordable Housing Programme project in Ongata Rongai, a unique housing facility that includes two-bedroom apartments.

The serenity homes are also part of the Boma Yangu initiative whose main agenda is to provide affordable housing to Kenyans.

Earlier in October, President Ruto revealed that the Government will streamline the affordable housing programme to make homeownership a reality for low-income earners. He was at Mukuru kwa Reuben for the groundbreaking ceremony for the project, which he said promises to give relief to more than 110,000 households in the 700-acre Mukuru kwa Reuben slum.

In addition, those who currently pay rent at Mukuru Kwa Reuben will have the option to do so in the new housing project in the form of a mortgage. Those who opt to pay a mortgage will have full ownership of their homes in 20 years.

"The Ksh3,000 they are paying rent there, they will come here pay a mortgage, when you pay Ksh3,000 after 20 years, that house will be yours," he stated.

The rent for bedsitters will be Ksh3,000, while a one-bedroomed house will go for Ksh5,000. Two-bedroomed houses will go for Ksh6,500 under the social housing plan.
