Former KTN News anchor and Deputy Editor, Broadcast, Sophia Wanuna, has been appointed the Deputy Director and Head of the Directorate of Public Affairs and Corporate Communications at the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).

Wanuna assumed the new role on Saturday, April 29 according to a notice by JSC seen by Viral Tea.

"Ms Wanuna is a seasoned Communications professional with 15 years of experience. She brings a wealth of experience from the media as an established journalist and newsroom manager," stated JSC in part.

The Judicial Service Commission promotes and facilitates the independence of the judiciary. It also helps foster the Judiciary's accountability and effective administration of justice.

Besides promoting justice across the country, Wanuna would be tasked with receiving complaints regarding judicial officers, including magistrates, registrars and other judicial officers at the body's administration.

The JSC, which she is heading, will also develop programmes that would be used for the continuous training of judges and judicial officers.

"I appreciate all the wonderful colleagues I had the privilege to work with as a journalist. Grateful for those who have watched me over the years. For the hundreds that I hosted on TV.

"A New Chapter now begins," Wanuna revealed while announcing her new role.

The appointment came days after she called it quits at the Standard Group Limited, which was a hammer blow to the media house that has lost a lot of talented stars to resignations and firings, especially if one was to take note of her years of experience, leadership and prowess in reporting across various issues.

Sophia previously hosted KTN News' political show, on Sundays at 9:00 pm Checkpoint and was a lead reporter on The Big Story - a current affairs show that aired 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm before it was shelved, making her arguably one of the best political reporters.

She joined SMG in December 2011 after her short stint in 2010 as an anchor at Mediamax's K24, having begun her media career at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) in 2008. She hosted the Morning Express during her early days at the media house.

In July 2021, she was promoted to become the new Acting Editor of SMG after the company let go of Broadcast Content Editor and Head of Strategy Peter Opondo.

One of her notable milestones was moderating the 2022 Deputy Presidential debate between running mates; United Democratic Alliance's Rigathi Gachagua (Deputy President) and Azimio's Martha Karua, on July 19, 2022.

Wanuna holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communication, specialising in Public Relations (PR), from Daystar University.
